it wouldnt be a bad idea! To be quite honest ive heard of people needing harnesses...and not needing them. what i'd do is buy the 55 watt kit and the harness. try plug and play first. if it works...be thankful! if not...go with the harness.

what I did to get my hids consistantly running with no bulb out readings on the dash is......i bought the kit and a relay harness. connected the power and ground the usual way. but the unusual thing i did is for the two signal wires, instead of plugging them into my headlight harnesses, i t-tapped them into my running lights. that way when i would turn my running lights on, the harness would begin to draw power for the hids. Then, i cut the positive signal wire and ran a toggle switch into it that is now located on my dashboard. So, when i want running lights i turn the knob as usual. then when i want headlights i flick the switch. it's kinda rigged up, but id rather have my shit work consistently and not flicker or shut off randomly.

BUT! i used a 35 watt kit. and when i hooked up HIDS to my friends 2006 ram (which may have different diagnostic systems then the 2010's), he was able to plug and play a 55 watt 6000k slim ballast ddm kit (like i showed you) with absolutely no problems. which is why i would recommend that to you first.

Got my 5000K HID Lows and Fogs off of eBay for $67 total. This included plug and play harnesses, ballasts, and a capacitor needed to keep them from flickering.

Installation was a breeze, took less than an hour for all lights. Mounted the ballasts using existing holes in the front frame work of the truck. Am looking into getting HID highs too, as the responce time is not a delayed as I was orignally told, and would still allow for the full use of the Optic Horn (Flash-to-Pass Highbeam) feature.
