Default Stock Navi Software/Map Upgrades?

I know when I had my hand-held Garmin there were map updates available or a lifetime map Plan you could purchase. The map updates are for new businesses that open or roads that open after the last map update in the navi.

So I just got to thinking how are updates done for our stock Navi's? Is it an automatic process somehow or is there a cd you have to burn and update new firmware?

about every 2 yrs or so Dodge will send you a notice in the mail, saying it's time to purchase new map updates... It's about $199.

I've already gotten a notice for the '10 Challenger that I purchased back in December...

Salesman told me that it was a "blanket mailling" and that everyone in their system got the notice. There isn't any sort of "free updates" time period like there is on portables

Thanks,....so I wonder if they just send you out a disc to upload new firmware into the head unit or if you need to make an appt. for them to upgrade the software themselves. Did your notice say if you need to schedule an appt. or pay for the updates and they'll ship out a disc or give you a password off an update site where you can update the firmware?

Just curious about the procedure...I probably won't update the maps for many years until they really become oudated...just curious though.

The maps are sourced from a company called Navteq. Navteq provides the data to many of the navigation companies, and requires them to pay for updates.

Garmin is a Navteq customer and probably get's a special deal.
