Default Bought truck yesterday and having shifting problems today!

I bought a 2007 Ram 1500 Megacab 5.7 Hemi with 17,000 miles. Well today it was running great and then we went to the store and when we left the truck felt very very laggy. The truck would only rev to 2 grand and take forever to accelerate. I think it was stuck in a high gear or O/D. I stopped and manually put it in 1st and it accelerated great. Then put it back in drive and it was back to being laggy, I had the pedal to the floor and it wouldn't down shift or anything just tried to accelerate in the high gear. I have to go back to the dealership tomorrow to pick up my garage opener I left in my trade-in but any help will be appreciated just so I kinda have an idea what it could be. I grew up with manual cars so this is new to me. I love this truck so far but this is something I don't want to see in a vehicle I just bought. I traded in my perfect running 05 Subaru STi for something that was more family friendly and now I have a truck that needs work. Granted the stealership should step up and foot the bill, i maybe put 40 miles on the truck since I bought it. Granted it has a pretty good sized lift and knobby tires so that probably doesn't help the transmission, but I figure if I can manually put the truck in first then it should be electrical or maybe the torque converter but I'm just guessing.

Maybe the transmission control module glitched out. Or, a transmission valve body went bad. Does it shift at all on it's own?

Any codes being thrown?

With only 17K miles on the truck I can't believe it's a mechanical failure.

Welcome to the forum, by the way.

No codes were thrown when it was doing this (at least no Check engine light and I don't have a code reader) and it would not shift on its own. Well I just had to make a run to the store and guess what the truck accelerates and shifts like a dream now. So I'm def. leaning towards computer or electrical now.

Yeah, the first suspect that came to my mind was the Transmission Control Module. Check your trans fluid level and condition of the fluid.

I'll check that tomorrow as it's getting dark. The tranny fluid should be a reddish color correct, at least that's what it was in my car. BTW, thanks for the quick posts and help. Also are you running the 5.7, if so what kinda mileage are you getting of it?

Yes, it should be red. And sniff it..if it smells burnt, it is. But color usually tells the story.

Yes, I have the 5.7 in a MegaCab so my mileage sucks. Hwy avg just under 14 mpg at freeway speeds.

An 07 with 17K should still be under warranty.......maybe......depends on when on 07 it was sold....but trans is powertrain, and that is 5years I believe.

If I can get that Ill be happy lol. The truck has 325/65/18 tires on it and so far I have only driven in the city and the digital mpg gauge stays around 10. It has an exhaust and I'm thinking of installing a CAI to help the engine breathe a lil and maybe free up some ponies while increasing mpg. Also I need to add some nerf bars and then I'm done with parts and on to enjoying it.

Nice looking truck! Real clean. The mileage computer thingy shows the average since the last reset, so to see how your doing, you can reset it and it will start all over again. If you reset it just before a long highway trip, you can get a pretty good idea of how well it's doing on the highway, and then do the same of urban driving. Based on the year and mods, best guess is 14 highway, 9 urban......based on my 08 2500 hemi.

Thanks, I love it....now if I can just figure out the shifting problem. So far I have to be honest after being on the Subaru forums (NASIOC) as a member since 2004 you guys help out alot more and are much nicer about giving out information. You can't ask for help on there without some tool telling you to use the search bar to find your answer.
