Are you saying the fluid and filter were changed 2000 miles ago and the filter was black? Or are you saying the fluid is black now? Or,???

mine does the same thing. (96 ram 5.2 4x4) I changed the filter and fluid and it helped a little , but not much. I was told by a transmission shop, there is a piston in the trans that wears down and the fluid leaks by the piston and causes pressure loss. The only fix is a rebuild. Hope this helps.

First off, welcome to the Ram ForumZ! We're glad to have you aboard.

Some codes are not easily read using consumer scanners, but the dealer scanners can read them. This is likely the best place to start to determine what exactly is going on.

Real condition. Although many of us here are known for the occasional sarcastic remark (some more than others ), we are not likely to subject a new member to our warped sense of humor until they have had a chance to get to know us a bit better.

Tough call. The more advanced the trans, the more things that can go wrong during a re-build. Then there is the matter of specialty tools. You are probably in a better position to answer this question yourself, as you know better than anyone else what your shop and tool supply is, as well as your knowledge and comfort level. Although I have a very well equipped shop of my own, I no longer tackle my own trans work. I prefer to leave this to the trained professionals that also offer repair warranty.

BTW - We all like pix! Got any to share?

Enjoy the Z!

$1500 is about average. They told me mine was going to be $1200 - $1600 depending how much damage was done.. Not sure how comparable they are to 700r4's to rebuild. Transmissions are not my strong point in mechanics. I just bought a 360, transmission and transfer case out of a 94 for mine. That will be my winter project.

I have the exact same problem. What type of scanner can be used to check the PCM or ECU for a sensor. I am new to OBDII systems (94 Ford Explorer owner) and I am a little confused about onboard diagnostics
