Default Scraping noise in steering column

I have a 98 Ram, and I'm getting a scraping noise inside the steering column which is more noticeable the faster I turn the steering wheel. I've had the plastic column covers off, but the scrape seems to be coming from farther down in the column.

Any idea what may be causing this, and what can be done about it?

Thanks!

Don't know the answer on this one, sorry. But this will put it back to the top.

I had run this by a Dodge mechanic on Just Answer, and he said that it could be an internal bushing that has gone dry. I tried shooting some silicone lube down in there but it didn't help. Is it possible to disassemble the steering column assembly without really messing things up? If it can be pulled out of the sleeve, perhaps the cause could be found.

I'm not sure if this will help but, my son's (2001-2500 w/250,000 miles) has the same problem for the same reason and the info he got was; It's not rebuildable and a new one (column)is expensive. He did drill a hole in the skin and squirt some lube in and it did get better. The column is pressed together during assembly and can not be rebuilt is what he was told. Hope this helps-ya.

Thanks, 808 kuma! As long as I know it's not something that's going to cause the steering column to fail or lock up, I can deal with it. I'll try drilling through the sleeve and shooting some silicone lube into it.

Thanks again!

Interesting. I still have that annoying click in my column and so far, no one has been able to explain a cause or a fix.

I would probably spray some type of spray grease . Silicone spray won't last very long .

Good point. Can anyone suggest a good brand of spray lube or grease?

Zep makes a high adhesion grease called PL2000 . I use that at work and home . I believe Home Depot does sell some Zep products .
