I want to learn more about engine upgrades / swaps and transmissions rebuilds & heavier duty trans.

Where do you guys look and learn when you want to understand these things better. I do not have much knowledge about those things and I am looking to find an "idiots guide" starting point so to speak.

Well starting very basic, the first and most simple modifications are bolt-ons.


They call them bolt-ons because... well... they simply bolt on. These include intake, exhaust, tuners, throttle body spacers, spark plugs/wires and other minor things. They all together make a great difference on your trucks performance.

Next is internals, heads, cam, crank, rockers, basically anything you cant see Lol. All these mods are more expensive and may require professional installation. Just remember, all an engine consists of is a lot of bolts and gaskets.

Lastly as far as engine mods go, there is forced induction. Superchargers, turbochargers, and nitrous. Nitrous is the cheapest of the 3, and will provide the most horsepower for your buck. There are risks depending on how big the shot is. Turbochargers for our trucks (5.9) are remote mount and I don't believe there is a direct fit kit. Basically, they are under the truck and use the exhaust gases and virtually eliminate boost lag. I don't think we have any front mount turbos for our trucks. Lastly there is superchargers. Kenne Bell used to make a twin screw supercharger, but I doubt they do anymore. Now we only have centrifugal superchargers. They run at a relatively low PSI and boost increases as engine speed increases.


Swaps aren't really necessairy for us. We have a great foundation. There is the godly 408 stroker we can build off of our engines. Don't need to say much more.

As far as transmissions go, I don't know much at all man. Sorry.

Best "idiots guide" I've ever found was a Chilton's manual for the specific vehicle. Usually can be found at the local parts store.

Cajun, I am always looking to turn a wrench or make adjustments so long as I learn as much as possible & tear up as little as possible.

98SST, Your post was great! Thanks. I have some bolt ons and love them. In the eventual future I want to make my truck the "toy" and do what I please with it. That includes getting inside the engine at some point. I am interested in doing as much as I can learn to do myself. I am fine with naturally aspirated engines especially since mine is a 4x4, I don't care for fast as much as I love power. I need to find out more about the 408........ I like the idea of cams, heads, and rockers.

I am looking for the Chiltons guide but haven't found it locally. I do have the Haynes and it's helpful.

There are several books out on the market that are a excellent source of information . Years ago they were called the Chrysler Bible . They are put out by Mopar Performance Parts . They can be purchased through almost mopar preformance dealer . There are several different versions of the books . Suspension , street truck , A engine , B engine , Hemi , etc... I purchased all of mine from Mancini Racing . I think I got them for about $5 a piece (clearance sale) . Their normally are like $30 each . Hope this helps ya out .
