Default 3.92 gears or 3.55 gears?

I am going to buy a new 2010 ram 4x4 hemi. Which gears will be the best. Mostly highway miles and pulling a small boat. I have talked to several dealers and they say no difference in gas mileage. Any advise. Thanks.

The 3.92 will serve you better, and there will be a slight reduction in gas mileage...

I prefer the 3.92 myself, even for highway use. I recommend driving both before making a decision.

3.92... don't fear the gear. Will give you better in town mileage, will allow you to tow easier and while you tow your gas mileage will be better. Without towing if you are a speedster it will supper a little on the freeway but not too much.

3.92 gears. as was said slight loss in mpg, but not enough to warrant going with the 3.55 gears. also the 3.92 gears come with a limited slip rear end which is a good idea.

You are smart to ask this group before you buy. I did'nt find this site until after my purchase. I have the 3:55s in a 4x4 and pull a boat. The only thing i dislike about my new truck is the 3:55s. As I have stated before, the 3:92s should be standard on all 4x4s. Just look at all other responses, I did'nt see anyone saying going with 3:55s. Boy did Dodge miss this one!

I wouldn't say they missed so much as they should make the 3.92 standard equipment with the 3.55 being an option. If I had to guess, I'd say that the 3.55's are for fuel economy numbers as much as anything.

Agreed about the mpg rating. Its too bad that rating is so important that it makes Dodge put the wrong gears in a truck that is meant pull. After all it's advertised as the weekend pulling machine. I even have the built in brake controller, what a joke.

We just bought a new truck, and thought it had a 3.92 in it, but after driving it, it's a 3.55. Not real happy. The salesman told me I could drive it in tow mode. I thought with a towing package, it would be lower gears. Boy was I wrong. Stay with the lower gears, the mileage won't be hurt. Good luck Doug
