I live in Toronto, so its not exactly mountainous here.

Having said that, the hills I have towed across are handled effortlessly. As you see in the attached photo, the trailer I use is not exactly huge (although we pack it so heavy that we have blown out the trailer wheel hub twice!)

I pull a 29' travel trailer b-trained with a 14' boat trailer with my 3.55 gears. I always use the tow/haul mode and it holds gears no problem except on the really steep hills where it will kick down a gear mid hill.

I wouldnt worry to much about it, unless you hauling on a daily basis

Does anyone remember when transmissions didn't have OD. A time when a 7+ liter engine made under 300hp. A time when you wouldn't even consider 3:92 or 4:10 gears unless you were trailering the Titanic daily.

I remember one. my 1983 Ford F250. 460 (225hp, 380lb/ft), 4spd, 4:10gears. Top speed - 85mph. At 60mph, the tack was at 3100 rpm. 10.5mpg (imperial). What's that....about 8.5mpg (US). Pulled like a banshee!

Now I have a 5.7L (345cid) with 390hp and 3.92 gears. Top speed - unknown, but better than 100mph. At 60mph, the tack is at ~1800rpm. 10.5 - 26mpg (Driving style dependent). Pulling similar trailers, it out performs my old Ford so greatly, the Ford might as well have had the 302 with 2.73 gears.

Even with 3:55 gears, you can choose to not use 1 or both of the OD gears, and it will still out perform most yesteryear trucks.

For pulling a boat around a few weekends a year, the 3:55 gears are perfectly fine. If you were pulling the trailer more than not, I would recommend the 3:92 option. Either way, IMO you have nothing to worry about....either gear set will work well for your application.

Enjoy the performance that many years of technological improvements have brought to the car lot.

I got to say, the difference betwen the two gears is not night and day like some claim it to be. I drove 4 different rams before buying mine. 3 of them were sports with the 3.92 gears and 1 was an slt with the 3.55. I end up buying the SLT because it had the options that fit me better. BUT when i bought it, i forgot to check the gear ratio on it, assumed it was the 3.92 like the other 3 and did not find out until after that it wasn't the 3.92.

I was a bit dissapointed at the beginning when i found it out but i also didn't even notice the difference when test driving the 4 trucks. When towing heavy loads im sure i would, but for day to day driving with a light load, 3.55 gears have plenty of kick to them.

Thats my thoughts on it, if your doing mostly unloaded driving and the rare tow on a medium weight load, i really wouldn't worry about it. Not supposed to be racing around when towing loads anyways lol.

Call the dealer with your VIN.

so just for those that have not seen it or want to look, here is the 2010 Bodybuilder guide from Dodge with trailer max with tire sizes

http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/201...ammlup1500.pdf

Also after doing some more research - I found the following on another forum -

Quote:
For the 2009 4x4 Crew Cab with 20-inch footwear...

With the 5.7L and 3.55 axle:
- GCWR is 12,000, maximum trailer weight is 6300

With the 5.7L and 3.92 axle:
- GCWR is 13,000, maximum trailer weight is 7300

With the 4.7L and 3.55 axle:
- GCWR is 10,500, maximum trailer weight is 5750

With the 4.7L and 3.92 axle:
- GCWR is 11,500, maximum trailer weight is 5950

Remember that the weight of people and gear in the cab have to be subtracted from the maximum trailer weight. Hope that helps!
So looking at that, you are getting an additional 1000LBS with the 3.92 gears vs the 3.55 using the same motor and wheels/tires

hope this helps someone.

I have lifted my truck with 4" and 35 inch tires, with 3.55 gear, and im getting around 16 on freeway miles. On paper it's 18 on freeway. Of course i have CAI and Exhaust installed. MPG is great, but it's way slower then the original height and size tire. Don't do much towing, but really thinking about switching out the gear to 3.92. Just not sure if it's going to get back the factory speed. Before all the mods, i was able to take out my friends 07 Ram by half of a truck. Now, i lose to him by a WHOLE truck lenght....but my truck looks better than his.

does anyone know if it kills the factory warrant if you have the dealership swap the gears?
