Default rear end gear question - chevy comparison

Hey guys - I am hoping that some of the studs here can help me with this question.

How does the 3.55 gear of the HEMI compare to the 3.73 gear on the 5.3 Chevy?

I have a bass boat that I will pull through the mountains periodically and was curious the difference between the two.

I am not a gear head at all (yet) so any help and info will be appreciated.

Gear ratios are gear ratios regardless of manufacturer. A 3.55 gear will give you better mpg than the 3.73 but less out of the hole power. Whereas if you got the 3.92 gears Dodge offers, you'd get poorer mpg, but better out of the hole and towing power, plus the added benefit of a limited slip differential.

Limited slip means when one wheels starts to spin/slip, the other side will grab.

so my HEMI has less tow power I guess I have found the first thing that I hate about the truck and may not be able to live with. It is my fault - when we started the buying process, we looked at some many trucks before we found this one I was sure that I checked the gear on it for the 3.92 but like I said I was wrong - my fault.

This is a perfect question for me to answer. My boat weighs 4000 to 5000 lbs. Half of my fishing trips we take my Dads Tahoe. Same roads and distance. Results: Taho in 3rd gear, pulls the boat really well. Slower at take off and passing. Dodge in 4th gear, with tow haul pulls well. But the torque converter has to go out of lockup often. Tahoe does not downsift at all except really steap hills. For this reason, the GM is less anoying when pulling. Plus the constant unlocking of the torque makes me concerned about the transmission lasting when warranty is over.

Its not the Hemi that is the issue. It is what Dodge puts in as "standard" gears. Its pretty much the consensus here they should be putting 3.92s standard.

I have no idea how much it would cost to get them swapped, but it would be worth checking into. If you're 4x4 just make sure you do front and rears.

The 3.55's will pull fine, just not as "crisply" as the 3.92's out of the hole. You've got a motor that for a gas powered engine puts out a boatload of hp and torque. Plus 5 selectable gears in the tranny.
