Remerson may come in and counter me on this, but I say BULLSH!T.

Call another dealer. All the Rams have the same transmission and no way would it cost thousands of dollars to fix.

Would cost 'thousands' at the stealer just to swap BOTH gearsets on a 4WD though,,,

The front is a PITA,,, OEM Gearsets can run (don't quote me) as much as 6-800 a set.

Transmission would not need to be swapped out, but would have to be flashed to make the speedo read right,,,

I just called a local 4x4 shop. Estimated cost would be $2400. At that price it would be worth it. Might want to check around and then go back to the dealer with the estimate in hand.

Not to be negative, but the Dealer won't waste much if any of his time looking at a 3rd party estimate. Even if the 3rd party is using all OEM parts (doubtful) I just can't see a dealer doing any 'price matching' on this type of work,,,, Too much corporate red tape,,,

IMHO, dropping several grand on gearsets is a decision worth taking your time on,,,,

Going from 3.55 to 3.92 is really not that much of a change at all,,,, (about ~10%~, which,,, ball park figure,,, is only about ~200~ rpm @ 70 mph,,,,)

Please be very sure that you want only a 3.92 and nothing lower than that,,,, What would really suck would be if you dropped a good chunk of change on this and ended up with something that was pretty darn close to what you already had,,,,,

You could always just step down a tire size. I got the 17's with the 265's, and it gives me a better ratio at the tires. I don't tow often, but enough that I decided not to get taller tires, just more aggressive.
