Default 2010 2500 vs 3500

Hi folks i was wondering what the difference between a 2500 trx4 and a 3500 larimie is. they both have cummings engine and are crew cab, both have 373 gears, other then a few bobbles in the larimie, does the 3500 have a stiffer suspension then 2500. The 2500 has a 10.5 rear axel is this inches does the 3500 have a bigger rear axel. both are automatics thanks

The 2500 is a 3/4 ton and the 3500 is a 1 ton rated suspension. But to take full advantage of the 3500's abilities for towing etc you really need to get the dually.

It's mostly bed carrying capacity and tow rating, either travel trailer tongue weight or fifth wheel hitch weight.

I am looking at the 2500 vs 3500 also. The dealer tells me the rear end is identical, he claims the only difference is an overload leaf spring on the 3500. Does anybody know if the frame is the same?

Wow - there's that dumb salesman again - making me look bad...

There are lots of small differences in the 2500/3500 trucks.

Yes, the rear end on single rear wheel trucks is the same, but I believe the axles themselves (inside the rear end) are different. *Need to verify this.* The frame is the same. The springs are stiffer/stronger on 3500s to carry the extra payload. The front suspension is tougher too. In addition to suspension, the braking system on the 3500s is upgraded. The Brake Booster puts out more stoping power, and the calipers have more clamping force, allow for more control of heavier loads.

Consequently, the ride of the 3500 is rougher than that of the 2500. And the brakes are more sensitive.

The powertrains are the same. Same engine and tranny, same available gears, same 4x4 system. So are interior options.

The 2500/3500 distinction is all about capability. A 2500 is more capable than a 1500, but can still be driven everyday with little or no fuss. But if you need to tow or haul, get the 3500, you'll be very happy you did in the long run. Just don't be upset if the ride when empty is a little harsh...

The price difference between the 2 would suggest that it's a little more than a leaf spring. As Simcik mentioned, the 3500 has beefed up suspension and brakes. It is also available in a Dually for those really big load requirements.

If you are familiar with the ride difference between the 1500 and 2500. The 3500 is that much stiffer again. In the 1500, you hear the bump. In the 2500 you feel the bump. In the 3500, you become part of the bump.

Rule of thumb, don't buy a 3500 if you will be running empty all the time.....Or make yourself a box liner out of 1/2" plate steel!
