Default Octane

I've been using 87 octane. The manual says 87 is acceptable but 89 is preferable. I have a 2008 Chrysler 300c and my 2013 Ram 1500, both have the hemi motor and run fine with the 87 octane. I tried 89 octane and didn't see any difference in gas mileage so why pay the extra.

My last fill up was Sunoco Ultra and I'm averaging 9.2 mpg!!! I normally use premium and average around 12 mpg. Reading these posts, I think I may switch to 89 octane or maybe 87 octane. Very discouraged with my last fill up. Wondering if some other problem has occurred since my last fill up?

87, gas prices currently in my city are 1.389 per litre (this equals, 5.27 per US dallons and 6.25 per IMP gallon) was 148 bucks tonight to fill up my truck (it took 106 litres which is 27.9 US gallons)

I run an aftermarket cam and some goodies. Use 93 octane with a custom dyno tune. Not massive hp gain over 87, but enough for me. I wish that when I had my heads off, I'd had them milled .30 or so for another 10-15 rwhp. Greedy, you say, yup.

Default octane boost ?

has anyone else pondered the idea of buying bulk octane boost like a 5 gallon pail then just using smaller bottles at every fill up to add the boost?
just an idea. i bet a pail of boost would be around a couple hundred bucks and treat like 2000 gallons?? anyone crunch the numbers or try this?

i used to use toluene in my subaru and it really made a difference in the butt dyno. it is a paint thinner that is already in gasoline that apparently has more stored kinetic energy than octane boosters. i tried it in my hemi and didn't notice it. maybe i needed to be on a more aggressive tune to notice.
