Default 2002 1500 instrument cluster issues

Ever since i bought my truck, the instrument cluster lights have been messed up and only the left side lights up. Along with that, my dome lights only come on when the doors on the right (passenger) side of the truck are opened. The left (driver) side doesn't trigger the lights. I've already replaced all the lights in the instrument cluster once. Also, when I installed my aftermarket stereo (it was messed up before i installed the stereo) when i touched these two different wires together, the instrument cluster lit up, but wouldnt shut off so i left them apart. Anyone have any clue as to why it does this? I was thinking there may be a short somewhere because I've checked all the fuses several times, but I dont feel like tearing apart my truck to find a short. Thanks

You most likely have a bad door switch for starters. If the cluster lights are ouot again, you really only have one option - replacement. Have you made sure the dome lights are set to come on when the doors open? If they are, you may have a bad switch. What colors were the wires you touched together?

yeah they're set, because i can hop out my door and the lights wont come on, but if someone gets out the other side, they will come on.
I can not quite remember, I think one might have been yellow. I might be able to get back in there and try again, but im afraid ill screw it up. (I'm not the worlds greatest electrician lol).

I may have misunderstood the first post a bit. Do the dome lights come on with the doors closed when you turn them on manually?

I have to think you have a bad switch in the drivers door latch.

Well, what about the drivers side rear door? Would it be bad too?
