Default Steering box play

Hey guys. My steering box shaft has developed some side to side play, just enough so I can feel it in the steering wheel when I hit bumps. How much longer do you think I can go before replacing it? I know replacing it ASAP would be ideal but money is a little tight so I'd like to stretch it for a little longer. Thanks!

You might just need an over center adjustment as opposed to replacement.

Right on Randy. But I'm not sure if he means rotational slop in the steering shaft or side to side play in the stub shaft. Either way....... an over the center would show you the problem, and if it's just rotational slop that'll fix it.

The steering isn't sloppy, I think the box is just getting worn out. If I grab the steering shaft right by the box and wiggle it I can feel side to side play. I can also feel the play if I grab the pitman arm and wiggle it. When I say "wiggle" I mean up and down, side to side, I'm not turning the shaft or pitman arm. Hopefully that makes sense, it's kinda hard to describe. Would a steering box stabilizer fix this? Or would that just be a temporary band aid? I appreciate the input!

I have same condition. I only feel it on bumps, and same play at box as you describe. Not sure what to do.
