I'm not sure if this is due to it getting on the exhaust or rotors or if it is burning in the diff. Either way he works it very hard towing a large camper through the mountains of colorado all the time. Obviously the diff can't stay that cool when doing this so I was thinking it might be a good idea to put a diff cover with cooling fins on but can't find one for the rear of a dana 60. any suggestions? I don't think any of the bearings are bad yet though. and it is a 2001 2500 cummins.
Get a very thick gear oil, a fin based diff cover will help. If he is having bad bad issues with overheating then install an external cooler for it. That or go with a larger differential, meaning you would have to upgrade the axle (not reasonable).
Replace the fluid often also. But to cut to it, differentials don't last forever. The bad thing is when the transmission out lives the differential haha. But it happens.
