Default Engine will not fire

As I mentioned on Intro threads... I'm stuck with dial-up and tried to search here but found nothing that would help... so forgive me if it's there and I missed it...

I have a 99 RAM 1500 Laramie 5.2L 4x4 Auto 100K (maybe 110K now) miles...

2 days ago I went to start my truck and it turned over just fine but never fired... late for work I tried till I almost killed the battery... I didn't start it at all the day before and it had rained all day... I have had trouble with intermittent rough running under load and the CEL will sometimes flash when this happens but it doesn't stay lit... I don't have a code reader

there is fuel under pressure at the distribution point so i suspected ignition problem(s) I checked rotor cap plugs and measured coil resistance ...plugs supposed to be .04 gap... average gap was about .125 cap contacts were aluminum and badly deformed rotor just as bad so I replaced everything wondering how it even managed to run at all... wires were not run as per TSB 18-48-98 so that could have been the rough running problem...

anyway... still no go and the battery is now dead and will not take a charge

under the rotor is a plastic plate with a pick up of some sort... is this a sensor for timing? fuses all are good and I don't know where to check to make sure there is power to the system... I hate sharing the wife's and kid's go-carts ...lol... I want my truck back.... any thoughts or ideas appreciated... I prefer not to pay the $100 tow to get it to my mechanic

If the battery won't take a charge from a charger, that is the first place to start. Take it to a parts store and have it load tested. Did you check for spark when you cranked it before? You should be able to do the key dance to get the code: key off, key on X 3. Codes should show up in the odometer window. Post up results.

If you have no spark , it could be the crank sensor .

Thank you... battery is taking a road trip after work to the parts store, odds are it was already weak and I killed it cranking till it wouldn't turn over, I assume that I cleared the codes when I disconnected the negative cable to install new parts, but I will check anyway before I head out. I couldn't check for spark by myself, or at least couldn't figure out how to, old days I could have jumped the solenoid... I may pick up the sensor if they will let me return it if not needed... again, thank you, will post follow up late this afternoon.

came home yesterday with a new battery and a Haynes Repair manual so I would be able to be absolutely certain if it was the ignition control module... read up on what to test so I'd be ready... installed the new battery and put everything else back together... it fired right up... Thanks for the help... btw... couldn't get any codes to show up on the OD

..of course on the test drive I ran over a mystery piece of metal and killed passenger side rear tire... but it runs again the spare is good and flat looks fixable

Glad its fixed. Sorry to hear about the "mystery metal" though. Probably saw you coming and jumped out just before your tire got to it.
