Depends on which trans you're talking about. There are 3 autos in common usage today.

I am not familiar with the different trans types, I guess I would choose somethinggeared towards towing.

Are you trying to decide on which truck to buy? If so, I'd do some comparisons on overall vehicles.

Depending on what you want to tow (weight, not just size), you will have to decide between the 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, and 1 ton (dually is the best option if you need the 1 ton because you are wasting a lot of capability without it)

Then go to the various owner's forums and see what they have to say about their trucks.

I don't know any folks here not happy with their 3/4 ton or 1 tons for towing.

I'm talking 3/4 ton w/cummins. I'm just starting to look at used units and didn't know there were transmission options. Thats why I'm curious about anyones opinions on theings like a transmission comparison betwee Dodge & GM w/Allison.

Depending on cost anywhere from 04-06. Obviously the older the less expensive. Cost is a definite factor for me. I don't tow 20K lb. loads, but 10K isn't out of the question.

An 04-06 Cummins ram will have a 48re transmission. It's a 4 speed auto and while it is a reliable transmission it doesn't have some of the features an Allison has. Allisons of that era were a 5 speed and have the grade braking feature. Bottom line is a 48re will get the job done but an Allison is more sophisticated.
