Default 1500 econ on...

First posting here - My dash displays "econ on" when the 1500 is in cruise and on a level road; I've been wondering what that entails, is the engine switching off a few cylinders to save fuel or is this display like the old vacuum gauges we used to put on our dash to impress the girls?
I did a search and also looked into the owner's manual but so far I've found no explanation. Anyone here knowledgeable on this?

Thanks,

Bill K.

4.7L does not have either MDS or VCT/VVT to the best of my knowledge. According to the Owner's Manual it simply signifies you are driving in a fuel efficient manner.

The only issue I really have with the way its programmed for economy is high gear. If you go by the speedometer my truck (4x4 3.55) will not go into high gear at 55 mph indicated. You have to accelerate to 56 mph, wait for it to upshift, then slow back down to 55 mph. I suspect its programmed to upshift around 54 mph and the speedo is about 2 mph optimistic.

This is what I suspected, it's just a modern day vacuum gauge I guess!
