Default How to: ERASE Vinyl decal's and DBL sided tape

So you've got the itch. There are these stickers and badges and moldings all over what could be the blank canvas on which to make your masterpiece..... Maybe the guy that painted your front fender put the RAM lettering on 6" to high on the driver's side..... (yeah that was my reason) Whatever your reason is, tangling with all of the sticky mess that lurks below can be pretty scary. I decided at first to just pull it all off and attack the double sided tape with the Goo Gone. It worked in a couple of spots but was taking entirely to long!

I had read about a 3M Eraser Wheel (also called a pinstripe removal tool) I called a local Automotive paint supply store and sure enough they carry them. The 3M brand one will run you $30-$40 but the shop I went to carried a Nonbrand version for only $11.00. This device is basically a 6" wide Art Gum Eraser. Very similar in texture to what you find on the end of the average #2 pencil. It is attached to a drill bit. YOU MUST NOT USE ONE OF THESE ON A DRILL IN EXCESS OF 4000 RPM. Doing so may result in catastrophic failure of the material it is made of resulting in personal injury or damage to your vehicle. I used this tool at only 700 RPM. Here's a video on YouTube showing how it works. I'm sorry there's a Chevy in this vid.....

In total with this tool removing 2 sets of RAM lettering and 2 sets of quad cab side moldings took about 30 minutes. This tool is a consumable product and you will use it up eventually. The tool itself will break down as you go leaving behind a bit of rubber dust and the rolled up remains of whatever you were removing on the ground. Once I had everything off with the wheel I took a soapy rag and wiped the freshly de-gooed areas and gave it a quick rinse with the hose. Far easier than fishing line, goo gone and elbow grease if you ask me!

How's that old saying go? "A day late and $11 short..."
Just spent countless hours de-badging and de-gooing my truck, then hours of polishing, and a slightly damaged fender flare (brake kleen removes goo.... and Line-X!)

What is the "off brand" and where did you get it for $11 (for the next time I have a decal dilemma!)?

The one i got is an "Astro Brand Stripe Eraser". I got it from a place called Colormatch Collision Center Solutions. I found them by googling automotive paint supply. The wheel was $10.70+tax :-)

I am not even trying the passenger side until I get one of these wheels. Spent hours yesterday and today just doing the driver's side. What a mess, but totally worth it!
