This may have been addressed already, but the neutral button on the 4X4 control is only for when you're actually towing the vehicle (see recreational towing in the manual) - it's not used when shifting from 4hi to 4low (gear selector is used for neutral in this case).

(4x4 is the dial on the fly) Anyway the truck does not go into 4x4 when you do this, I actually tried 3 other trucks and none of them did. I called around......3 different mechanics from 3 different dealers stated the neutral button is only for when the truck has to be towed (especially if it is stuck in 4x4 and has to be towed).

I called dodge main office,,,,, a man called back left message saying the truck has to be in neutral before you go into 4x4. I wanted to know if anyone knew about this.
Besides the different messages the truck is GREAT,,,, 1st dodge (always had ford lol) and it is just really nice.

Any info is appreciated and sorry for the long post........ This site seems really cool,,, a true wealth of information

Not sure if you resolved this or not but I'm just curious what owners manual your referring to about the 4x4 operation? I also have a 2011 Ram 1500 Sport and the DVD (manual) that came with mine is very clear about this operation. Basically what others said...when going from 2WD to 4AUTO or 4LOCK and vise versa can be done with the truck in motion. You might have to release the gas in order for it to engage the 4x4. Only when going to 4LOW must the shift be done at very low speeds (2-3 mph) or stopped and the same when shifting out of it. Did you get the DVD owners manual? If so just pull it up and search for "four wheel drive" and it will pull up the specifics on this.

Also the neutral button by the 4wheel drive selector is ONLY for flat towing behind another vehicle. It disengages both the front and rear driveshafts from the powertrain.

Hope you got this resolved.

sonny13 is on a distinguished road

Thank you so much for the answers. I still do not know how a Dodge rep could have called and gave me the wrong info, but the manual is obviously an error.

Great sight here, goes along with a great truck,, Now I just need to bone up on the mods and see if they really make a difference lol

thanks again
