Default Changed starters not won't start

Truck: 1998 Ram with 5.2L

Problem: Starter has been going out for a while and finally gave up the ghost (@ 3 am never the less.) I did work on the existing starter for a while, hitting it and (attempting) to turn over the engine. Wore the 1 year old battery down pretty good.

I replaced the starter with a remanufactured one, and truck almost started and starter sounded like it was doing what it was supposed to, but due to the weakened battery, didn't quite start. After the first starting attempt, the starter didn't respond at all. The starter isn't doing anything.

At this point I got a pretty good jump and the battery responded well.

Rechecked the electrical connection, and found that I had forgotten a socket right on the wiring connections.

Tried another starter with the same results, except it never fired off even once.

I have since replaced the starter relay.

Tried jumping again at this point just for kicks.

Truck still won't start.

Any suggestions to help me start my truck?

Check Fuse #9 (30A) in the fuse box under the hood.

I agree with Brad

but, disconnect the battery, put it on a charger, 12 volts for at least 3 hours & try it again

for some stupid reason, our charging systems only put a surface charge on the battery, it takes a battery charger to give the battery a complete charge

Thanks for the input guys. Does anyone have a source for a fuse box map as to which fuse is my #9? The diagram underneath the fuse box top is not numbered.

Please advise.

Here is the legend for the 2001 Ram. I believe yours is the same.

1. If the starter is hung up on the ring gear it won't turn, try to turn the engine over by hand just a smidge, and then try it by the key.

2. If the battery was weak, MY trucks would flood out really easy. Mashing the pedal in start mode disables the fuel injection, to clear the cylinders.

3. Try to reset your ECU. turn key on, disconnect neg on battery, turn key off, reconnect battery and try to restart.

4. Are your battery connections getting hot? heat = resistance, = low continuity, = starter being a bad actor.

That was only my personal experiences over the course of years, you may find your fix different, please post the fix when you get one!!! Thanks!!
