Default New to diesel power

Purchased first diesel Dec 2009; 2001 ram 2500 4x4 3sp+ OD auto slt laremie long box 211000 miles. Live in B.C.. Love the truck. Rolls up the passes on cruise @ 70mph @ 1200rpm aprox.
I pulled my 32.5 1997 5th wheel first time uphill, Oct 2010, 230000 miles,. 650ft rise over 10 miles. Was unable to get more than 40mph @1750 on the uphill grades. Changed the fuel filter after on advice and found that it has the origanal lift pump.
I expected more. Tacks out at 4000 but am unable to reach 2000 in any gear or stationary. Is this normal. Any advice that does not invole major mods. I was thinging of chiping [ bullydog ] but it sounds to good to be true that you con increase torque and rpm on a stock truck without sacrificing some thing else .
Oil change, non syn, @ 6000 miles. Replaced power steering pump, AC compressor and condenser, and front passenger side axle seal since I have owned.
I would like to thank this site for getting me through the fuel filter change.

one thing that will help is bring your truck to a shop and have them adjust the valves and next question is does it ever start hard or have a delay start which is making it crank for 10 seconds or more because those common rail cummins generally throw injectors out after so many miles

you can adjust the valves yourself and it is not a common rail engine in a 2001. first thing is aftermarket lift pump and gauge. pull codes and see what you have. after lift pump look at an edge or quad for a chip. but would just about guarantee that the fuel pressure is too low, fix that and will be like a new truck.

Default thanks

I have no trouble starting and have a code reader but no codes on the truck. I will have the fuel pressure cheacked. I found an origanal lift pump for $400 out the door. I'm thinking these are hard to find and should pick it up, or.....
As far as the valves go I know enough about diesels to be dangerous. How intense is the procedure.
Note; Before buying I cheacked out many forums for problems this truck may have. The most talked about was #4 fuel line coming lose at the last holder causing the line to break. Ckeaked it as soon as I got the truck home and it was finger tight. I now cheack it every oil change at lest.
My small contribution.

checking valves is easy, here is a link to the procedure.

http://mopar.mopar1973man.com/cummin.../valve-adj.htm

don't mess with a stock lift pump, get an airdog, fass, or raptor. I have the airdog 150gph and does great. for 400 you can get a raptor, or for 530 you can get an airdog. pm me and I will send you a link to where I bought mine, they come with filter, water seperator, 1/2" line and all hardware. best money you can spend on these trucks. edge comp is adjustable 40, 60, 80, 100, 120hp and the juice with attitude is the same with gauges. quad addrn I believe goes to 180hp and has gauges. I have the juice but thinking about moving to the quad since it has more adjustments. I have towed 10k plus multiple times w/o problems with egt or anything else.
