Default 2003 1500 rear axle

I am new here and have a question
My friend has an 03 1500 ram quad cab 5.9 short bed 4x4. approx. 100,000 miles.
The other day he was driving and he heard a noise and about 1/2 mile later the rear end blew apart. There is a hole in bottom of the pumkin. A roller bearing is sticking out of the hole. The drive shaft fell off. The nut is still on the drive shaft and the front bearing is destroyed. Yoke still attached to shaft.
What could cause this? The rear had oil.
It is a 3:55 limited slip.
He was told that this is a problem for Rams of that year.
Thanks

HArd to say for sure without seeing the damaged parts. A likely cause would be the diff cross pin bolt breaking or backing out allowing the cross pin to come out of the diff and mangle the rear end.
