Default Driveshaft crud

Hello,
I got under my truck today just to look around and I saw fluid and gunk buildup around the place where the universal joint and the driveshaft meet caked up in that area. I sprayed some engine cleaner in that area and let is soak for a few minutes and pressure washed it off. So far I have not seen any leaks but I going to have it checked out, has anyone else had this problem in the past.

I have had that on almost every vehicle that i ever owned, no matter what brand

you did the correct thing, clean it up & check it periodically, if your vehicle has grease fittings, someone didn't wipe the excess grease off, if don't have the grease fittings, you may have sealed units that are beginning to lose the seal, if thats the culprit, then i would consider getting serviceable u-joints, from NAPA or a driveline shop, do NOT get the cheapies from Pep Boys, Kragen, Carquest, Oriellys, etc. they all have to much play or slop built into them. better brands are at least .020 closer tolerance

On the other hand, if the dirty build up is on the outside of the differentials pumpkin, it may be a loosening bolt or a differential seal starting to go bad, but, if the differential has not been taken apart, its not so likely to be that seal

Most likely what you cleaned off is grease that has leaked from the joint.

Does the u-joint have a grease fitting . If it does you may of just cleaned up excessive grease from the joint just as Randy has said .
