I'm planning a 6 month trip beginning next Spring throughout the Western U.S. and Canada. So, if I have a permitted pistol along, am I okay as long as it's unloaded with a trigger lock and in a gun safe? Or, will customs hassle me or even confiscate it at the border any way?

"Cheaper Than Dirt" has a neat little non-scuff magnet that I've mounted on my center cup holder door. While it will hold any of my pistols that fit in the space (with the door open) I usually just go with my little Ruger 380. If the cup holder door is open it's out of sight but still reachable. If the door is closed it's still not too noticable but is ready to grab and go now.

im not sure about the transport of a pistol across the border i think it would cause issues simply because a pistol is considered a restricted firearm in canada. Canada customs may refuse entry, your best bet would be to contact either canada customs or the RCMP in the provinces ur traveling in.

Leave it at home and take a big wrench!

no sense in losing a pistol or being hassled

Interesting! I can't see that performing too well over bumpy roads though (esp. in the cup holder up position. How long has you had that set up? Do you notice any wear from the magnet on your slide?

Absolutely no problem with the little Ruger (or my G23) on rough roads and I've hit bumps hard enough to make the door bounce. My truck being a 2WD I haven't been offroading but I believe it would still hold fine. That little magnet (appx 1" x 4" x 1/2") is exceptionally strong. Also, the magnet has a rubber coating and I haven't seen any damage on the pistol. I do make a point to pick my pistol straight off and not slide it free and mine stays there full time. If someone were to take a pistol on & off of the magnet daily I can see where some wear might occur to the finish.
