Default Cant decide on new head unit

So I have a 2 week old 2010 Ram 1500 with a RES radio, and the RES isnt cutting it... lol. I never owned a car that I didnt change the stock radio on, either going aftermarket or upgrading to a better factory radio. With that said:

I cant decide if I want to go with a RER radio or an aftermarket radio like a Pioneer AVIC-X920BT. One of the deciding factors is having a HDD. I really like the idea of being able to put pictures and music on a HDD. Is there any aftermarket head units with a built in HDD for storage? I havent seen/heard of any. (and at the time of posting this, I'm guilty of not really looking to hard for one either.) I also really like the USB and AUX inputs on the radio face. AND, loss of steering wheel controls sucks too

I dont care about sat radio, sat radio always sounded like shit to me. I dont care about iPod control, I will never own an Apple product.

The RER is going to be more expensive of course, and then also I will want to unlock it and thats going to be even more $.

So do I go with the RER or aftermarket?

If aftermarket, it must have everything the RER has, including HDD/bluetooth/cd/dvd/nav/mp3/wma and backup cam input, etc...

Thanks guys!

If you want to go aftermarket, the Pioneer is a good choice.

And you don't have to lose your steering wheel controls when going to an aftermarket head unit. Just get a PacAudio harness for that function to remain.

The RER is nice but remember, the NAV maps take up a LOT of HD space which cuts your audio or video file available storage space to right around 17GB I believe.

Very good points Michael, and yes, the NAV takes up a little under 17 GB on the RER. Which for most, 13-14GB of space is fine, for some......

Also, to the original poster, the NAV on the RER is nothing to write home about, I personally rather my Garmin over it. There are a few aftermarket units with these capabilities, but they come with a price. It all depends on the ultimate goal of the system. Are you replacing the speakers as well?

Keep in mind some aftermarkets will take sd cards. Could put your music, pics, and videos on one of those. I've seen 64gb sd cards, would think that would be plenty big.

I have a bunch of music vids on my pc. I'm going to put those on an sd card in mine.

Tru... this may be a viable option...

The Pioneer units feature Garmin NAV. I'm not sure about Kenwood or Alpine units but they may also.

Even the older Pioneer AVIC D and Z series feature them.

And with iPod connectivity, you can have all the music you desire without a HDD head unit capacity being compromised by NAV maps and data.

I got my clarion NX500 from ebay and it came with a backup camera and a warranty through the company I bought it from. I'm happy with the unit so far. The only thing I'm a little annoyed about is I can't get my Iphone 3GS to sync with it or bluetooth. I'm sure there will be an update that will solve this issue. However, it does have an AUX input in front that I can hook it to.
