Default Had a rescue today

I'm an industrial high angle/confined space rescuer, and don't get to perform any sort of rescues regularly like firefighters do, so when I do get to do a rescue, it's a big deal. Well, we had a good amount of excitement at work today. We had a worker collapse (later found it was due to heat exhaustion) inside a tank today and me and my rescue team had to extract him. The tank had 2' of waste skim crude oil (think thick sandy tar) in it, and the workers were shoveling it out, under breathing air, wearing Tyvek coveralls, AND a full rubber rain suit. Needless to say, it was HOT in that tank as the crude needs to be heated in order to move it, coupled with all the gear, breathing air, and exertion, it was a recipe for heat exhaustion.

The worker ended up collapsing just inside the manway, and our confined space watch notified our rescue team immediately, and I am so proud of my team... from all parts of the plant, everyone of us was at the scene in under one minute.... one guy jumped a small fence, another bowled over an operator who was blocking the access gate, lol. I arrived last with our rescue trailer and my rescue entrant was already suiting up to enter. Once we got him under air, entry was made carrying our SKED system and backboard. The second rescuer entered under my direction, the worker was slid onto the SKED and skidded to the manway where we were able to get the worker out of the manway and get his air mask off.

We got him stripped out of his rubber suit, tyvek, and coveralls and stated getting water onto his body and he came to, and was able to start hydrating himself. He downed 1.5 litres of water in a few minutes. Once he had stabalized, we got him transported to the paramedic's office where they gave him a full once-over.

Luckily, the worker didn't lose any pulmonary function when he blacked out, and fell onto his back, so the exhalation valve on his regulator didn't get clogged by the crude. Total time from call to extraction was less than 10 minutes, and I can honestly say that I am proud of my team and how we all worked together I'm gonna boast a bit here and say that since i'm one of my companies rescue instructors, I trained both of my other team mates; and they knew exactely whet they needed to do, I was extremely proud of them.

Moral of the story... watch out for everyone around you when you're working and if it doesn't feel right, don't do it.

Thats great Kurtis . Most of the time when confined space incidents happen theres normally more than one persons who will enter without the correct gear . That is awesome . You even have to commend the confined space watchman .

Nice. It's great to hear when a bad situation turns out well. Props to you and your guys on the rescue.

Carefull letting someone so dehydrated down water that fast though. If he lost to much salt in his sweat (as I would expect he might have wearing a rubber suit in a heated tank) that volume of water could him hyponatremic and ultimately make things worse. Great to hear how everything turned out though.
