Default Oil light goes on, truck shuts off.

Hey all,

The other night I was at a light when all of a sudden I hear a chime and my oil light comes on. No less then five seconds later my truck shut off. I put it in park, took the fob out and started it back up no problem. The EVIC does say I need an oil change but all other indicators are normal. No check engine light or anything, pressure is fine as well. Could it really do this because it needs oil that bad? I checked and it's not at an unsafe level in my opinion. It's got me really nervous and i've found myself babying it since then. Aside from suggesting an oil change (which i'll do first thing tomorrow) is there any solutions or similiar instance's you guys might have encountered? I've got an 09 Ram with the Hemi and 24k on the odometer. Also have Superchips and CAI. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys.

I'd say two weeks to a month? I'll admit that i've got a hunch that this is the issue but the fact that it shut off scares me into thinking something major is wrong. Maybe i'm just paranoid! But it's myt baby

Take it to the dealer for some "warranty" work.

Might just do that. Going to change the oil and take the tune off then wait a day before I go in.

2 weeks to a month is a whole lot better than if you had said 8 months to a year. LOL
Any chance that you have a 'Fram' oil filter? They have a reputation for collapsing internally, which would restrict the oil flow and possibly cause a low pressure issue that would demonstrate the symptoms you described. Either way....git it in to the dealer for both the oil change it is asking for, and have them check into why you experienced the oil light and subsequent engine shut down.

Well I think I may have solved the problem. Went for a spin today and put the truck through it's paces on some undeveloped suburban roads. Long story short it stalled again, but only when I put it in neutral and revved it up to 5000 rpm for a few seconds. So that makes me think to myself that I must have *really* low oil. Limped home and changed the oil in about 45 mins to find that I was down to maybe four quarts altogether. Anyway, I took it out after putting in some Mobil 1 5w20 synthetic in it. Tried the same thing and it did just fine. Couldn't get it to stall no matter what (did get a little hot though lol) but is burning three quarts of oil normal after only 24k?

Yeah, I'd check the filter. Since it is intermittent, I also suspect the engine oil pressure sensor may be glitching out.
