Default tipping (not cows)

Ok I need to find out something.. My local restaurant started charging delivery fee's. I want to know do you count the delivery fee as part of the tip or tip completely different.

Normally I give 20% on all my tips. Except when they include it, or mandate you tip them by including gratuity.

Do you consider the delivery fee part of the tip? (I hate greedy businesses)

Considering that the driver will typically get part if not all of the delivery charge, I take it into account when tipping.

Thats why I call ahead for carryout . I tip well when I eat at a restaurant . Some restaurants go ahead and figure your tip in when they give you your bill . I normally tip more than what they want when they figure it in . So I'll give them what they want .

I agree with Ramtech. I figure the delivery person only gets part of the delivery fee if any. Generally I'll give him/her $2.00 considering my average order is no more than $12.00 - $15.00 total including delivery fee and taxes.

They've started doing that here, too. I don't like greedy businesses, either and tend to think this stems from people not tipping much, if at all. My only real complaint with charging this fee is if the service sucks, I don't want to be forced to pay for it. Just ask the manager at my local pizza delivery store.

yeah if there is a mandatory gratuity fee, they are getting nothing more than that.

there are times when the service is exceptional, but they charge a gratuity and that annoys me to no end, so i only give them the charged gratuity.

for delivery, we normally give at least 15% - most places are still offering free delivery here though. but normally i will go and pick it up.

I guess my first step would be to contact the restaurant and ask "why the fee and for whom is that fee benefitting"? Ask the driver when he shows up. "I see you charge for delivery now, is that to offset your cost of fuel?" Assertiveness might cause management to reconsider this fee or spit in your food. Best of luck! Forgive me but I run hot and cold on this...if service is exceptional then I tip greatly. However, if you don't do your job you will receive nothing. I don't pay for laziness or unprofessional behavior. I have been in a situation where we were billed gratuity because we were in a large party, though we all were on seperate checks. The service was horrible and it took over an hour to get our food. I went to the Management Staff and told them I am not paying the incorporated gratuity. They adjusted my bill accordingly.

I do not consider delivery as part of a tip. It cost money to deliver, and as long as the delivery fee is nominal, I have not issue with it. If it's unreasonable, I contact the restaurant and let the manager know that I feel the fee is unreasonable and will 'vote with my wallet'. The 'lack' of sales to me is confirmation of my feelings.

Now....TIPS!! ..... This is a major sore spot with me. If the restaurant has mandatory gratuity/tip....I refuse to go there, because when it is mandatory, it is nothing more than another tax!

A tip is something that is earned! The staff are paid to do a job, just like the rest of us. Do your job.....collect your paycheck. If you go above and beyond what I would expect from you, and make my dining experience extra pleasurable, I may decide to tip, and if I do, it will accurately reflect my feelings with regard to my experience.

(Here's the part where I get yelled at about the staff that don't have a regular wage and are paid only out of the tips)

YOUR DECISION to work there....and like any other job, the better you are at it, the more you make. So if you are really so good that you don't need a regular wage and can survive on tips alone.....trust me....I left you a tip. If I didn't.....guess your not that good.

Excellent points Brad. Guess when it comes to actually going to a restaurant, where tipping is pretty much "expected," I usually start my tip high, 15% or better and, depending on the service I receive, go up or down from there. I have to work for my money and so do they.
