Angry Bad Rear Differential Carrier Assembly

Well, folks....as if I needed yet another problem with my 2010 Ram 2500 TRX4.

Took it to the dealer for a few problems, not the least of which is a hard kick in the pants/back when shifting into Drive when warm. It literally feels like you've been rear-ended by a Prius (ok, maybe a little harder than that) So, I'm thinking maybe a solenoid inside of the tranny or something, but the dealer calls me and says, "we're replacing the rear carrier assembly", meaning whole rear diff!! WTF?!? Steering box at ~400mi, jake went limp while in the mtns, now this?! By the way, the steering is still loose as ever.... Can't wait to break even on trade-in at this point...

2 Things -

1) What are you doing to your truck !!!
2) Isn't warranty awesome!

Sorry to make light of the situation, but it's one of those days where everyone within 100 feet, or with an internet connection is susceptible to my misplaced humor tonight...LOL

I can understand your frustration, been there before (Over 10 different warranty claims in the first 6 months), many years ago, but it will eventually get sorted out, and when it does, you may end up liking the vehicle as much as I did....kept it for 9 years. Hope yours get resolved soon. These new Rams are such a nice truck....hate to have issues detract from that.

Dang...well, at least they are taking care of the problem. Someone must have goofed up when assembling the diff. That indicates they didn't shim it right or didn't pre-load the assembly right.

No worries, Brad. You got to be able to laugh in the heat of frustration, else you die too early... I do love the rest of the truck, minus the abhorrent steering. Chrysler told me to shove it up my rear differential... (pun intended) , so I got a free 7/70 b2b warranty from them... I'll probably wait until at least then to trade it in on a competing vehicle, which should be about three years from now. What pisses me off the most is that I paid cash for this vehicle...

Here's the thing, Michael. I was an Aerospace Ground Support Equipment for 10 years, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it's a transmission problem, not a rear diff. I'll take the new diff (assuming the mech can assemble/shim/preload it right), but wouldn't it do it when shifting into reverse too? Also, it went away after a quick shutdown/restart... Tranny electronics/need new update flash?

Ya know, that might be another problem. But let's see what it feels like after they have done the work.

A cold auto trans will do that as the pump hasn't fully circulated warm fluids yet and it does cause some abruptness.

But why it doesn't do it in reverse, cold or warm, is a real puzzler for sure.

I'll keep you guys updated. Should know for sure if it's fixed after the drive home tomorrow.

I have a 2010 TRX4 that had a rear end rebuild at 2900 miles just done last week when i drove away from the dealer the howling was gone. I moved from texas to florida now it is doing the same problem at 4200 miles and is at the dealer again for the same exact problem. It is really frustrating but at least it is warrantied.

Well, guys... from initial driving, it looks like the problem is solved. It's smoother than ever going into drive. Hope it stays that way. I'll post back if it comes back. HISTOXIC, hope that your problem gets solved for good this time.

Update update update! The problem is back just as it was before. Took it to the dealership, had the service manager sit in it and he verified it. My money still says it's the transmission, transfer case, or software...
