Default Questions About Buying A 97 Ram 1500 4x4

Hi all, Looking at a 97 Ram 1500 4x4. 360 Auto with 83000 miles. It is a super clean truck and has been garaged during its life by the original owner. Is there anything in particular I should be aware of or look for? Thanks for your thoughts and advise.

83000 miles is pretty good miles. Take it to an independent mechanic to have it checked out. If the seller won't allow this, run away. Check http://www.kbb.com for the book value.

I agree as that was my first thought, that's very good mileage for a truck of that year. Brian has great advice, too, get it checked out by an independent mechanic. If the seller won't let you do that, run lol, but knowing what it's fair market value is will help you know if you're getting a good deal or give you an idea of what kind of offer to make. Good luck and be sure to keep us posted!

Change out the fluids like they should be . Keep a close eye on the transfer case oil . It takes ATF and holds only about a quart . So if theres a leak it won't take long before you damage the unit . If it has a posi rear , make sure you change out the gear oil and add the additive also . Keep that changed every 15,000 miles . (I think)

I have a 97 Ram and sorry to say not a well engineered truck. Too many expensive problems that Dodge should be held accountable for. Examples: brakes, transmission, cheap pressed steel intake plenum that leaks, on and on I could go. Stop don't buy it.

I just sold a 97 Ram 1500 4x4 5.2 Sport. I had it since new and put 164,000 relatively trouble free miles on it. It still ran and performed like new. I serviced it regularly. I changed the auto trans fluid and filter about every 15,000 and never had a trans problem. A water pump, power steering pump, fuel pump cartridge and a couple u-joints. One of the best trucks I ever had. I needed a bigger vehicle and got a 2007 Ram Quad Cab. If I get the service outta the '07 like i did the old one I'll be happy.

Speak for yourself....Ive not had one of those problems with my truck. You may have got a truck that was neglected, not taken care of and abused. My truck has over 176,000 miles on it and the trans still shifts perfect, it pulled a fifth wheel for awhile before i got it. I dont have a blown plenum and my brakes are working great(stop the truck great)

I know mine is a 2000 but still, its a 2nd gen ram just like yours and i will defend it always. These trucks are strong, and mine has been very strong and reliable. If you find a ram you want, Check it over and drive it. Give it some WOT's to see how it acts. If all is well, BUY IT. Everything depends on the trucks history and what kind of person owned it. And if they took care of it. I would drive my ram from FL to california and back with no problem...If only somone would pay for my gas i would do it! I trust my truck!

My 98 has 170k miles on it and still runs great. I bought it new and have kept maintenance up religiously and used Mobil 1 since new.
