Default Key question

I understand that if the battery in the key runs down, you can use the key inside the larger key, My question, will the key them turn the truck on, or is there a electronic code that needs the battery?

I thought this was such a good question, it made me curious. I took the battery out of my fob and, yes, it still starts the truck. Like most other smart keys, it must use induction to read the code from the chip in the business end of the fob.

The key inside the fob is only to unlock the door. You still need the fob to start the truck.

The remote unlock requires the battery in the fob. To start the truck you require no battery. The technology used in the key is essentially a passive integrated transponder. These are reactive to, and have their energy supplied by electromagnetic fields (as ken said, something akin to induction). This is the same technology used to "Microchip" dogs and cats, or that is used in electronic door locks on high security buildings. Each key (or microchip, or fob) contains a device that emits a coded signal when exposed to the correct field. This signal is read by the appropriate device, in this case integrated into the vehichle ignition, and matched against a set of known values. If the value matches then the vehicle starts, (or the door opens, etc.). In this way the fob is not keyed for the truck, but rather the truck for all valid fobs.

I was wondering the same thing yesterday, nice to know it still starts when the battery in the fob is dead!

So In theory, if you owned more than one ram, could you make the same fob work in both? If truly it is based on the truck recognizing the fob.

Nope once it's been programmed to one truck it can never be use for any other truck

Why not? I was under the impression the truck was programmed to the fob.

Because each truck has its own 4 digit security code and it cannot be changed!!!
