Default nasty sound coming from alternator

2005 ram 1500 w/ hemi engine.

recently I noticed a harsh sound coming from the engine bay, we\hen I removed the belt and spun the pulleys there is like a grinding type sound. is that typical of a bad pulley? the pulley spins freely just sounds like crap. is this fairly common?

Maybe a bad bearing?

Nope, grinding is never a good thing. If the sound is coming from the alt, then that tells you it's ready to go bad. On the bright side, at least it didn't leave you stranded somewhere for lack of power. Newer vehicles can act really funny when they have power fluctuations. In the old days the battery would get you home, now it's not 100% for sure.

Not worth it! It will cost you more in labor than just replacing it with a new one. Even if you could do it yourself, I don't know if they sell rebuild kits any more. Many years back the rebuild kits cost almost as much as a new alt so it was never really worth it.

Our alternators are built by DENSO and they are really good parts. I'd say, find an auto parts store that carries DENSO parts and get one.

You must have some pricey rebuilders where you live. I used to work in an electrical specialty shop and we did rebuilds all the time and frequently coul remove, rebuild and reinstall cheaper than you could buy the part in a chain store.
