Question auto to standard swap????

i have a 97 1500 ext cab short bed 5.2 auto an my trans is starting to go bad i was wondering if anyone has done a 5 spd swap? if so how hard was it? is it worth doing instead of having the auto rebuild? an what all would i need to do it? any help would be great.

thank you guys in advance

There has been some talk of swapping in manual tranny's on the 4.7 board. Nothing with the specific details your asking for but it might be a start.

Way more trouble than its worth. Swapping manual to auto is a piece of cake. The other way however.....

Yeah, you're looking at cutting a hole in your floor board and a new steering column. Just a lot of work that's super tedious.

New steering column? Is there a difference or do you just mean to do away with the auto shifter? I'm interested in doing a swap on my 94 4x4 and i'm not averse to cutting the floor and will just leave the auto shifter flopping. Besides the difference in the neutral switch (i can do the basic changes in the wiring) what would make it overly difficult? I want to find a wrecked truck to take the tranny, case, and shafts out of

Here's how it breaks down in my head. First off, removing the auto shift handle is a piece of cake, no new column needed. Now for the fun stuff.

1. New trans
2. Clutch
3. Bell housing
4. Install clutch master cylinder (if its hydraulic)
5. Install clutch slave cylinder (if its hydraulic)
6. Run lines for clutch fluid
7. Cut hole in floor of truck for shifter
8. Install trans brace on frame
9. Remove brake pedal.
10. Install clutch pedal/brake pedal combo (they are usually on the same shaft, not independent but I could be wrong)

11. New drive shaft and u-joints
12. Possible new transfer case or modification to the existing one.

That's about all I can think of at this point.

ok so no go without a donor truck. May be better to just build my 518 or find a torqueflite

Seems to me that's your best option. If you were going from standard to auto, it would be a piece of cake.
