As a large bore gun owner, if I was in the US, I'd probably jump all over this, but my belief in arms is slightly different than most. I don't believe that hand guns should be owned by ANYONE outside of law enforcement and the military as a hand gun has one purpose, and that's to shoot a person... when was the last time you went hunting with a pistol? Can't say I've know anyone that has, but it would be few and far between for anyone to do this. Long rifles have a purpose, and that's protection from/hunting animals, I can't say I'd like to see anyone on the business end of my .465 Holland & Holland Bolt Action rifle.

I may be stiring up a big ol' hornets nest here, but it's a personal belief and one that's held by many people outside of the US.

As for government control and taxation on firearms... canada had the gun liscence/registry, which made you register and license each and every gun you own 'so officers will know if they will be entering a house where occupants may be armed' and the fees were stupid for anything over 5 guns. I managed to side-step this registry for my H&H as it's a large bore game rifle and I had it decomissioned prior to moving to North America as I couldn't see a point to it over here. If I ever move back home I'll probably have it re-commissioned and re-barrelled

There are people that do hunt with handguns and I do prefer one for home defense because a pistol can easily be kept in a locked box on the nightstand that can be opened quickly if you're using one of the pushbutton setups. This secures the pistol where small kids can have access but still provides quick access if needed. I also enjoy watching pistol competitions such as mounted cowboy shooting and speed shooting. I do agree with your position on the limits and the way they are imposed in Canada. Who really needs more than 5 guns? The most I ever ownd at one time was 3 and they were for home defense and sport shooting.

There are good number of people that hunt wild hogs with large caliber handguns.

There are two laws that keep America free.

2nd Amendment and the Posse Cuma-tatus (cannot use active duty military on US soil to enforce laws).

Lost either and we're toast.

This is probably what the founding fathers actually intended. The idea at the time was that there was no need for a standing army. Rather it was the duty of all able bodied men to be appropriately armed such that they might come to the defense of the country when circumstances require. There is a good deal of evidence that this was the interpretation of George Washington.

Of course at that time all the rights pertained primarily to non-endentured men. As other rights have expanded to include all americans the same should be true of the second amendment and it is therefore the duty of all Americans to be prepared for militia activity should the need arise.

Of course we now have a standing army and this has periodically brought the spirit of the amendment into question based of the nessesity for a "well armed militia" in the modern world. However I belive the founding fathers also intended the militia as a safegaurd against the tyranny of government. Don't read this wrong, I'm not suggesting there ought to be an uprising or civil unrest in the US at this time, but I think it would NOT be in the spirit of the original document to abolish the right to bear arm thereby rendering the general populous defenseless against their own governers.

Except of course under the rules of martial law.

Don't get me wrong, guys. I do believe law abiding citizens with no criminal record have the right to own guns. While I don't go around lobbying for limits, I'm not against them either. I love fully automatic weapons as much as anyone (I played with my fair share in the army) but don't believe private citizens need them. Just my two cents.

I own several handguns and I do not want to shoot anyone. BUT if someone wants to harm my family I will shoot them and not loose a wink of sleep. That is why I fully and totally support our right to bear arms.
