Hey guys, just got back from our anniversary trip and we had a blast! One of the best parts was we went riding on ATV's. First time for me, she has rode dirt bikes in the past. So we had a trail guide who was super nice, super informative and we got to thinking, why don't we look into getting ATV's for ourselves! Well I've been looking online at different areas in my city that sell them. What I want to know from some of you here is:
1) What do you recommend for adventure's that would use them 4-6 times a month?
2) Staying with the "utility" style ATV's (ie. Polaris Phoenix or Yamaha Grizzly), what size would you recommend?
3) As far as low maintance goes, which manufacturer's are best? I heard Yamaha's are great for low maintance.
4) What size trailer should I look into for 2 of these to fit on. I need to get a trailer anyway for my lawn tractor, so I might as well get one that fits the ATV's too. I had thought about getting a smaller trailer for one ATV and putting the other ATV in the bed of the truck, but that would be a pain to disengage the trailer for every load/unload (unless there are other suggestions)
5) Any specific questions I should ask the dealer that might help out with - price, features, service.

This won't be a purchase I plan on making for a while, but I want to get a head start on it now, so when I am ready to buy I know what to look for. Here's a few pictures of us. Wish I had a better picture of the ATV I was on the second time. I'm pretty sure it was a Grizzly 450 which I really liked over the sportsman 350 I was on early (the guide let me switch to the atv he was on) Thanks for the help everyone!

I've been around quads and dirt bikes my whole life almost. If your looking strictly into utility quads the Yamaha Grizzly, Kawasaki Brute Force, and Suzuki Kingquad are all pretty good choices. (The Grizz has power steering). There are also sport/utility quads such as the Kawasaki KFX700 and Yamaha Raptor 700. My dad has a Kingquad 400, it's really comfortable and can go through pretty much anything as it's a 4x4. But it's a little underpowered. The utility quads can range from 300cc's to 850cc's. The choice is really up to you and your riding ability.
As far as the trailer goes your probably going to need at least a 12x4 ft. I have a 8x4 but the front and back tailgates fold down allowing 2 quads (Suzuki Kingquad and KFX400) to fit. The whole trailer tilts too making it alot easier to load and unload. I got it from home depot for around $700.

I pretty much agree with Juice except I wouldn't call the 700 Raptor a utility quad but rather a big bore sport quad. The Kaw and Honda 700's are both automatics where the Raptor has a manual clutch/tranny. You also might consider a trailer made specifically for ATV's with a side load feature. I have a 6x12' trailer and two Brute Force 650 utility quads won't fit on it lengthwise and still allow the rear ramp to be closed.

Personally I prefer a sport quad over a utility for several reasons. Mainly because I mostly fast trail ride with some ocassional time on th MX and flat tracks and this type of quad is better suited to what I do. If you prefer a more leisurely pace with occassional bursts of speed and a more comfortable ride combined with the ability to carry hunting/camping gear, extra fuel or a cooler, then a utility with racks is the better choice. My advice is to ride several different styles if you can and see what suits your taste, needs and budget the best.

One word about riding gear. Don't try to cheap out in this department. If you have a $50 head then buy a $50 helmet. You don't have to get the most expensive one out there but do look for Snell and/or DOT stickers and try them on before you buy. A properly fitting helmet won't move on you when you shake your head side to side or up and down. Wear it for a few minutes and make sure it's comfortable. An ill-fitting helmet can cause headaches and ruin the whole ride. The best advice anyone gave me for gearing up is to "dress to crash, not to ride". I ride agressively, so I typically wear a helmet, goggles, gloves, riding pants and a jersey, chest protector, shin guards and boots - all of which have saved my ass at one point or another.

If you haven't already taken a safety course, I'd recommend one. Many dealers and manufacturers offer free courses when you buy a new ATV. Best of luck with your upcoming purchase. You're going to have a lot of fun!

Yeah, the power thing isn't a huge factor as we won't be going in places that require a lot. 4x4 is a must for that "just in case" situation that I'm sure I'LL get into. I don't like the look of the sporty atv's as much as I like the utility style. We're not a "balls to the wall' rider, but we do like the occasinonal burst of speed for a little fun. We like the adventure more than anything. That's why I liked the grizzly so much, but I've heard since it has the power steering that is just another gadget that could go wrong with it. I guess I just want to be sure whatever we end up getting will be reliable, easy to maintain, and fun. I was watching some video's of people out on their atv's and they had the whole rear exhaust under water. Couldn't understand how it kept running under water. We won't be doing anything extreme like that. Mainly trails that have trees, dirt, semi-shallow mud and of course the river bed crossings. At least for a while until I get cocky and try something that I'll regret! LOL. Do you recommend any necessary accessories at the time of purchase. I've heard that they all need snorkle boxes put on them, but ours that we rode didn't. Just the bottom plates, which I would assume all atv's have. We will both take the training course when we purchase, that's just for my peace of mind. As far as the trailer goes, never thought about a side loading trailer. Would a 6' wide trailer be wide enough to put one sideways? I was thinking of a 6x8 trailer should be big enough. Thanks for the reply! Yes her smile made it all that much more enjoyable!

Not all ATV's come with GOOD skid plates under them; some come with cheap plastic that won't hold up. Judging by the type of riding you plan to do, I'd consider getting a winch for at least one of them. They definately come in handy. As for snorkels and stuff like that, you don't need it unless you plan on going ass deep (literally) in the mud. Things like that are generally reserved for people that build their quads specifically for mud bogging and deep water crossings. My advice on the trailer would be to pick your quads, measure the length from front to back at the wheels and then get one to suit your needs.

Yeah, definately not going mudding that deep, at least not purposely. I was going to get at least 1 winch, I hear getting one for the front and back is a good combo too, but will probably hold off on that for a bit. So when I go out shopping I take it I'll want to make sure that the skid plate is steel/aluminum and not a hard plastic then, right? I found this trailer: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...7970_200347970 that I liked because it has a full length gate in the back and side ramps. The trick will be to see if I can get a dealership to give me the "package" deal! LOL "2-atv's and a trailer for 1 low price" That's actually how I shop for my vehicles, my wife and I will buy vehicles together when we can and it has saved us a lot in the past. The trick of this is keeping my impulse desire down so I don't just go out and buy. It's kind of hard look at our pictures and wanting to get back out there again!

I don't think your going to find a quad with an aluminum/steel skid plate unless you buy a used quad that someone put on. Pretty much all the skid plates are going to be plastic from the factory.
Also, when I bought my KFX the dealer was doing the "buddy pack" thing. It was 2 quads or a quad and a trailer. I didn't need the trailer because I only had one quad at the time.
