Default 85 carb issue

i have the 318 w/ the holley two barrel carb. i disconnected the charcoal canister cause it was pulling charcoal up into the carb. if i leave the upper bowl vent open, it does not want to start. if i loop it around to the lower bowl vent it will start, but the moment i give it gas it sputters out. its the only thing keeping it from running. i routed all the vac lines back to OEM per the chart, so i'm good there. my dad plugged the to vent lines individually on my 83 and it ran fine. tell me what you think.

I have an 86’ and removed the canister also. I did the same thing and routed the upper side to the lower front vacuum and didn’t have any problems. There is a third line however (at least on mine) from the canister down to the frame and back to the tank. Make sure it’s capped. Not sure if that’s the problem. Also note worthy, I had to adjust the idle and choke idle settings.
