Angry Need Help! Whatd I Do?!

Hi fellow Dodge owners, I got an issue here, figured I'd check in with yall first insted of having the truck towed to the shop!?
Heres the deal; Bought the truck (96 1500 2wd reg cab long bed 318 auto 4 sp 245000 mi (maybe rebuilt)), drove it all last winter, ran great and i love it, end of this summer suddenly had a hesitation problem, not a real big deal just loss of power and the occasional backfire. Read the codes (OBD 1) found bad tps, replaced, problem persisted but not as bad... SO, figured I would do basic tune up - plugs, wires, cap, rotor AND I removed the throttle body and cleaned it ( only cuz i found a thread on here showing step-by-step how to do it) Great post by the way.
On hopes of eliminating the hesitation problem - put it all back together. Will not start, I've done everything I know to do - to the point of rotating the engine by hand to make sure the timing was right #1 on tdc rotor pointing to #1 on dist. ect..... Cranks over but sounds like the timing is off?? And smells like gas? Occasionally backfires thru the throttle body? Im totally at a loss and cant see paying a mechanic to fix it when its probly something simple that I did. Im not THAT familiar with Dodge but have always bune my own vehicle repairs with sucess. Sorry this is so long and ANY responce would be GREATLY appriciated!!! Thank you all for your time - This is a great and VERY helpful site!

I did a quick check on the allpar site (http://www.allpar.com/mopar/318.html) for your engine and although I'm not an expert there is something there that mentions vacuum advance on the distributer. Did you accidentally remove the vacuum line or otherwise adjust anything ? Since you are getting fuel it does not sound FI related. And since it occasioanlly backfires you must be getting spark. Perhaps check and make sure you have the wires going from the dist to the plugs correctly. That's all I can think of, someone else will chime in with more advice I'm sure.

BTW, Welcome to the forum. This is a great site with lots of helpful members.

You didn't get any of the sensors on the throttle body wet internally ? It sounds like your getting spark if it's backfiring through the throttle body . Verify spark first . Could be a posssible ignition coil .

Ide look and make sure wires are connected write. then check for spark. it could be crank shaft position sensor not reading clearly thats where i would start my testing.

as well as checking connectors stuff.

Yeah, I thought firing order as well, I checked rechecked and checked it again just to make sure that wasnt it. Even when I pull the coil wire off and crank it over it still sounds the same(not right)? Vacuum advance makes sence but I THINK the onle other thing coming off the distributor are the wires for the cam sensor. I have verified spark. Would the iac cause a no start condition? I took it off the tb and cleaned it good, I did notice that it is retracted, you cant see the pintle when you look into the tb, not sure as to what position its supposed to be in?? I hope to fugure it out. Thank you all for your help, 'tis appricieated!! BTW, that IS a good, clear, BIG pic. of the firing order!! Nice work!
