One other small tibit of info. I noticed my speedo is off it runs slow. So actually I typically run 10-12 more miles on a tank than the trip reads based on my GPS.

O.K. second fill-up. Overhead computer reads 16.2 mpg. Hand calculation says 15.25 mpg. So, a little better than the first tank. The main difference is that I drove with O/D off on my short trips and non-highway.

On the other hand, it dawned on me that I was basing my hand caculations off of the odomoter readings from the overhead computer and not the odomoter on the dash, which doesn't have a trip set.

Just because I'm OCD about things, on this fill up, I'll compare the dash odomoter number to the overhead to see how close they are. Could cause a difference in the hand calculations again. It's kind of a pain since I'll need to actually write down and subtract the start/end numbers since I don't have a trip on the dash. Hopefully, it will be the same or very close to the overhead reading.

O.K. another report or two. I don't see any difference between the odomoter reading and the overhead computer. After doing the subtraction, the odomoter showed 368 miles since the last fill-up and the computer read 368.4.

This fill-up the computer showed 16.2 mpg for the trip but the hand calculation was at 15.7, which is an improvement over the previous two fill-ups.

I'm still driving with O/D off below 55 mph and running with O/D on above 55mph while not using cruise control. Tried something a little different this time. I routinely drive to work on a stretch of highway for about 10 miles in a 65 mph zone. Instead of driving right at the speed limit, I dropped down to around 60 or just a little above. By doing this, I noticed that my overhead computer seemed to like this type of driving better and I ended up this last fill-up with the computer reading 17.2 mpg for the trip.

This is one mpg better than I've done before on the computer reading. So, I was expecting the hand calculation to end up around 16.2, but nope.... it ended up at 15.3 mpg. Right around where I've been all along. So, while that style of driving seemed to manipulate the overhead, it did nothing for actual mpg.

I've had the truck for almost 2 years now. Routinely see 16.2 on the overhead computer. I no longer hand calculate as it is usually right around what the computer says or a half mpg below.

I quickly dropped the experiment of driving with OD off and then switching to on depending on the driving conditions. No real difference and a hassle to constantly switch.

If I really baby it and keep it under 65 mph, I can average 18-18.2 at best. It seems that if I'm on the highway, the best thing to do is keep it right around 60 mph.

My dad has a 2005 single cab long bed 4.7L with I assume 3.55's. It's an auto trans. He has stock tires(probably 245 70 17 as they are smaller than mine). He says no matter what he does (drives easy/hard/tows) he gets ~17mpg avg.

Most days I drive 50 miles to work and back. My parents bought my soon to be driving son a 4 cyl. 4wd reg. cab Tacoma that gets around 21 mpg. He will drive 7.5 miles round trip to school.

At this point, I think we're going to switch commuter vehicles. I'll drive the Tacoma to work and back and he'll drive the 4 dr. V8 to school. Seems like the best option considering how many more miles I drive than him.

ya 18 to 21 isn't a huge difference though. I had a 4 cylinder s10 before this even with 220k miles it got up to 26 hwy(usually more like 22-24) and my current ram will get up to 23(usually more like 20). I don't even really notice a difference on the wallet. Plus I'm driving significantly less.

All my driving now is city though I get like 16-17 city where the s10 got like 20-21 city. Still not really noticeable on the wallet.

Finished out a tank and the computer said 17.5. Hand calculated for the first time in a while. Came out to 16.1. Oh well. No matter what the computer reads, the actual is somewhere between 1/2 below to 1 1/2 below.

I typically get about 18.5-19.6 out of my truck with a split of city/highway driving. That is manually calculated; I've noticed there is also a significant difference based on the fuel I use...BP typically nets the highest mileage (19.6 almost every tank), Tom Thumb (amaco gas, I believe) generally doesn't get me above 18.

As for my truck and driving, it's a 4.7L with 6-spd manual transmission, 265/70R-17 BF Goodrich All Terrain TA tires, not sure the gear ratio. My in-town driving averages 35-50 mph, highway is 70-75. My big kicker - I don't use my AC, with rare exceptions, and usually have the windows down. Full-time AC use drives my mileage down to the mid-high 17's.
