Looking at pics with the headlight out the OEM air intake port really looks inefficient for feeding a 5.7L Hemi.

When I saw the size of the stock airbox along with using a drop in K&N air filter I felt compelled to enhance it with a 3" cold air intake tube. I've done this before on my 2010 Avenger and a 08 RAM, when I saw the clearance around the 4th Generation RAM's airbox it was a no brainer. lol

You could spend more by using a name brand system but really this will work just as well for allot less cash.

jmr, much credit to your digging into the OEM airbox and coming up with what I can't help but believe has some reasonable performance return. I'm going to do a similar mod to my '12 Express, and I would also like to swap the air tube from the box to the throttle body with a smoother, better flowing setup. Airaid has some of these for other models, and they told me they had no plans for the later Rams to provide these. There's apparently a change from some point at '09 or earlier. I may try their U-build-it kit like I saw another poster use but not sure if I want to go to the expense. The extra ram air inlet, higher flow filter, and a smoother throttle body tube should be sufficient for my need.

Your intake mod along with a performance muffler swap should be sufficient for my needs, and the price is right. Thanks.

Default Great job JMR

This thread just talked me right out of the Volant CAI that I had on my wishlist. I already have the K&N drop-in filter so with the Volant setup at roughly 375(with the Ram Scoop) and the DIY with the Airraid TB tube at 140... Its a no brainer. And leave me 200+ more bucks to do other neat things. Thanks again JMR!!!

jmr, did you use 3" dryer vent hose? Yours looks metal. At Lowes today I didn't find any vinyl, rubber, plastic or metal 3" hose...plenty of 4". I got a sample of 4" to test, but I see why you went with 3". It looks like 4" is doable, but the fittings and all really make fitment difficult due to the size. I think I'm going with 3" RV sewer hose...fairly durable and quite flexible. I'm still looking for the ideal fitting to install in the fake lower grill area. I want a real ram air effect by finding some kind of vent duct that I can mount flush to a hole cut in that fake grill.

I also noticed what appears to be a rectangle shape molded into the same plastic panel that the OEM airbox vent hole is in. It looks like you could cut a hole in that area for some other air attachment. It would draw air from the same general area as OEM. Still, I like the lower inlet option better, especially with a ram air setup. Man, that stock airbox is a piece of cake to remove.

If you go to Home Depot and look in the drier vent section you should be able to find 2 types of flexible metal drier vents--3" and 4". If you use a 3" shower drain to put into the bottom of your air box and another 3" shower drain at the end of the flexible vent hose, alone with a couple of 3" screw clamps that should do it.(maybe a couple of large tie wraps also) The only other thing is trying to drill a 3" hole in the bottom of the air box. The ridges in the bottom of the air box make cutting that hole----"challenging".

I used a 3" Aluminum flexible duct from Lowes, it was by the heating/cooling duct piping fittings.

The drain grate that I used is 3" PCV that is made to fit inside 3" PVC schedule 40 pipe. I removed the grate section to maximize airflow and really it's purpose was to connect the 3" aluminum flexible duct to the airbox. The grate was located by the PVC fittings at Lowes too.

You'll need a hole saw (similar to what you use to drill the lock/mechanism hole in a new door before you mount the doorknob). Check out Lowe's/Home Depot.

No worries. You might have trouble getting the hole saw into the airbox. If that's the case, simply measure where the center of the hole should be and drill a small pilot hole. You can then use this hole to center the hole saw when cutting the 3" hole from the outside of the airbox.
