In the past on my Avenger I used Duct tape to cover the top of the tube inside the airbox to close it off for the winter. I'm leaving mine open though...let it breath in that cool air.

Water will not be a issue, there is still a 3.5" x 4" hole in the side of the airbox for the original intake so water will drain through it.

This method of modding the OEM intake is not going to draw water up the added intake hose. In a true ram air system with one or more lower mounted intakes that could be immersed in water, you can get that soda straw effect that could bring water all the way into the final intake tube. With the OEM intake hole mounted so high in the fender well, you lose just about all of the suction effect that the lower hose can provide to draw that water up the hose. Now, once water gets high enough to cover both intake holes, you get the suction needed to draw that water with the engine still running. But c'mon...LOL!...we all know when you have water that high, you probably have other serious problems occuring...like the truck floating away...LOL!

I initially and seriously pursued the idea of routing the lower hose through the lower fake grill to make a ram air intake, but with the even larger upper intake hose that's routed into the fender well, I think you lose too much potential ram air pressure to really make it worth it. Just the extra volume of air for the engine to draw from, however, is more than worth the small effort and cash committment this mod provides. It's a great, simple idea.

What's important is that you are drawing in cooler air, that's what will make more HP.

I don't think there would be a pressure change unless you close off the original intake duct even then it wouldn't be much.

I cut out part of my lower grille and put some mesh screen to let air in, real pleased with the results. This should keep junk from getting sucked in.

chuckie, that's very nice work there. That's what I was planning on doing. Still, I think a good deal of the ram air effect may be lost due to the other OEM opening in the airbox, but it certainly won't hurt anything for the opening to be down there. Looks factory quality...maybe better.

Looks great! Next time you have it off you might hit the inside of your tube with some flat black to better hide it in the shadows. It almost looks like another headlamp at first glance.

Pretty clean! I want to do that but all the way across and I have yet to find anyone who carries the mesh with that pattern in 6 foot widths. Hell if Home Depot or Lowes had it (and yes I know that will rust if it isn't treated) I would buy it, cut it to fit and get it powder coated satin black.

The piece I got was from metrorestyling.com
It will fit all the way across. I didn't do the whole thing because my hideaway license
plate covers the middle when up and honestly I didn't want to spend the time with dremel and sandpaper trying to get clean cut lines. I spent almost an hour on each end alone. Didn't notice the inside of the tube was visible until I put it together, definitely will hit it with some black paint.

Chuckie I used your idea only with a different mesh design, it's a plastic mesh from Lowes we'll see how it works.
The 4" tubing on the passenger side is painted Black yet is highlighted from the cameras flash.
