Question which to choose?

I love my 99 ram. was thinking about the best way to add H.P, tear the engine down and put a more agressive cam and have the heads done, or buy the programmer or a chip. Any thoughts?

Well personally if your going to tear the engine down to just do a cam and heads i would spend the extra time and money and build everything up. However a programmer would be probably cheaper then tearing it down but without any additional mods a programmer won't do super much for HP

I do have a few mods installed. mostly exhaust. i'm working on some tb mods to help it breath a little better. then the chip or heads.

Whether you tear it down or not, it will benefit from a CAI, opened up exhaust (headers and all the way back) and a programmer/tuner.

Talking

well i do have headers and a high flow cat back system so flow should not be a problem. the delima i am haveing is i am looking for about 300 to 350 HP. i am not sure i can get that from the programmer. do you have any experience with them and how much did it help?

Sounds like if you are gonna tear it down, which is what I'd do, then go with a bore and stroke, increasing cubic inches.

You won't get that kind of gain from a programmer. It will require you build an engine.

A buddy of mine out here got a used 5.9L from a wrecked truck and had a local firm build him a 408 forged stroker for it. They did a dyno and he was getting about 390 at the crank with a mildly aggressive cam and MOPAR heads with some porting and polishing, a FAST fuel injection system and a B&G custom PCM flash. The truck runs great!

That'd be what I'd do. At least check your bores for wear, and if you can't spend for the stroker, at least bore your your block .030 or .040. IMO ring seal is crucial to power with these engines.

well i was hopeing to get out with as little time lost as possible. Having said that i dont think i should tear it down without aleast having the block cleaned and checked. may need to get a rental for a little while.

Problem with doing just the top end on an older motor is it is very common for the increased compression to blow out the bottom end.
