Cool Woohoo! Always go cam over programmer...

Fellas -

So I've had a good 2 days with the truck. Ripped off the heads, got them shaved, new cam, timing chain, and electric fan. Wow - what a huge difference. I've only cruised through the neighborhood and it feels like a completely different truck.

For anyone even thinking of a programmer, don't waste your time. This combo easily gave me 50 horses, and its a great start to build more power. I had a budget of $600 to do the whole thing and went over a few dollars because I bought a new thermostat.

Next on the list is headers and possibly an intake.

Since we all know the pic rule, here's pic while the heads were at the machine shop

Thats great!! As soon as I can locate a set of used 5.9 heads I am going to get the worked, port and polish them, do the intake and put a cam in also. Can you provide specs on the cam and the manufacturer?
Where did you purchase your parts from?

Did you do any port work on the heads while they were off?

I had the heads touched up, but the machine shop said there wasn't much. The ports on the intake are pretty close to each other already and the gaskets matched nicely. He did work out some of the flashing issues, but they only spent 20 minutes or so on them.

Here's what I bought:
Cam:

Fan:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G4904/

Adjustable controller for Fan (very cool because it sits between the fins):
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FLX-31147/

Timing set:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-2103/

Next on the list is a new radiator (got a little crack in mine while it was out of the truck), intake and headers.

The cam idles a little rough; I'd like to bump the idle up 100RPMs and I think it'd solve it, but the truck will die if I lay on the brakes. A vacuum canister may be in my future as well.

When you had the motor torn down , did you reseal the plate on the bottom side of the intake manifold ? Ya got a video/audio clip of how it sounds ? Would love to hear it .

I think it is time for a programmer. You will get the true power out of tuning it properly. It sounds like a great build man! I would love to put a cam in sooner then later!

A video clip would be great!

Thanks for the parts list. That is the same cam I was looking at. Did you change the lifters also?
Tom thanks for the link..... I will get ahold of him and see if I can work out a deal.

Now...with the cam and head work done, just think what a better tune will do...you'd be surprised. And I'm not talking about canned tunes...I mean a real tune done on a dyno in real time with your PCM programmed as a result. If you think you are grinning now, give that a try!

Yeah, I'm planning on getting it dyno tuned, but my transmission is on the way out and need to have it rebuilt first. Then headers and then a dyno tune.

I should've changed the plenum gasket, but it didn't come in the gasket set and I'm planning on putting on a new intake eventually, so I just put it back together.

I kept the same lifters and springs. The lifters weren't bad and just needed cleaned up. The cam calls for new springs, but it's just to solve valve float. I'm not racing my truck and don't plan on red lining it, so I didn't bother. When I swap out my intake, I may put new ones on. I picked up a set of push rods at oreillys for pretty cheap and tossed them in while I was there.

The truck runs great, the cam is throaty and my only complaint is the idle: it drops pretty low (sometimes dies) when its warm and I stop at a light or stop sign. Not sure what the problem is, but I suspect I'm losing vacuum.

I'll take a video clip tomorrow and upload it for you guys.
