Default COLD Starting DIESEL

Hi, I have a 2001, 2500 Ram with the 5.9L Cummins turbo DIESEL in it. I have read the threads in here about the starting problems. Mine may or may not want to start depending on the situation. I live in Alberta, Canada & it is already winter, 4" of snow & well below freezing. If I plug it in & use the grid heater element it will start fairly well. If I go out & park it say @ a mall, then it isn't being plugged in. Where could I tap into the fuel system to check the pressure & what should it be ? I want to also put a permanent guage to moniter it to check on the lift pump & injection pump. The truck has 2 batteries. What would be say a minimum CCA ( cold cranking Amps ) for the batteries to cycle the intake manifold grid heater 1 or 2 times & then crank it ? I measured the resistance of the grid heater @ 2 ohms. Is this good ? It does heat up ok I suppose. Does anyone have an electrical drawing/schematic of the grid heater solenoids on the left fender back to the engine ECM ? These questions will help me as well as many others I am sure - Thank you !!

Minimum fuel pressure from the lift pump to the injector pumo should be 7 psi cranking and 10 psi with the engine running. If you want to monitor lift pump pressure, you'd need to tap in somewhere between the tank and fuel filter for best results and you'll need to run an isolater to keep fuel out of the cab. I've seen gauge kits for the high pressure side for the Duramax but not fo rthe Cummins but there may be something out there. I would look into something like a Bully Dog or Edge programmer as some of these will display fuel pressure info.

Your batteries should be a minimum of 750 cca for best performance in the cold. I haven't been able to locate a spec for the heater grid resistence but if resistence is the same for both grids, then they're probably ok.

when was the last time you replaced your batts?

ive found that in most hard starting causes its because the batteries are old.

I was checking over the pre-heater system. The batteries are not that old but do need new cables & ends on them. What temperature should the pre-heater element(s) reach ? Is there 1 or 2 elements ? Is it true that the elements should draw 30 DC Amps ?? Also, I see wiring going to the underside of the internal fuel filter housing - Is this to warm the fuel or a water in fuel sensor ? Maybe has both ? Anyone have a diagram of this or a schematic ? As well it seems to have like a handle below it perhaps to drain any water - but how to drain it if it is below freezing ? Thank you >>

I'm not sure what they do to the fuel up here in Fort Mac, but I haven't had ANY issues cold starting my truck. I wait for the GH icon to turn off then give it a go. She's started every time. We've had -40C and I'll admit I ran the GH a couple times, but no issues so far.
