Good catch this is a fairly common problem not just with rams either I used to drive nothing but rangers and this was one of the first things i checked when I got one as far as using zip ties you can use them without any slipping problem as long as you use enough to fill the gap between the pedal and the end of the cable

I used a pen, cut to size, split down the center to push over cable, then zip tied it.

Did a test drive and omg! Before while trying to pass, Id have the peddle to the floor and if I was already going at a good speed, it wouldnt down shift. Now not only does it down shift but if I get on it again after the down shift, it will do it again and I am no were near the floor with the peddle.
