Default some questions before I buy

Hey everyone, I prob going to buy a tunner this month so I have a few questions, tried doing some searches but couldnt get the exact info I was looking for. 09 1500, 5.7 Hemi, Mopar CAI, 14" Mufflex

1. wich tunner is best, the tinnity is to expensive for me so that one is out, I was looking at Diablo sport tunner but 2 different web sites gave me 2 different model numbers,

2. Can anyone go into depth about obtimal shift points, knock sensor, rev limiter

3. Whats the deal on the MDS, Ive read that people are having gains in MPG by shutting the MDS off, that makes no sense to me unless its a systm more for emissions than fuel savings.

4. Are there any potential settings that can be harmful and should be avoided.

5. Are there any cables or accesories that are a must have that dont come with the tunner.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated, I have never owned a tunner before so Im just tying to get as much info as I can, thank you

In response to your questions:

1. I prefer the Predator for it's tuning flexibility and the results/gains I have gotten on two Hemi powered vehicles. The amount of gain will vary based on local ambient conditions, intake configuration, exhaust configuration and octane rating of the fuel available. The U9000 is a blank tool used to load a U7137 (Dodge Ram, 5.7L engine) tune package. There is no other Ram Truck Predator part number listed.

2. The optimal shift points are determined by where your truck makes the most HP/torque on the curve. It will vary by truck and by tune. I noted that my best HP/torque rating came at around 5250 RPM so that's where I left it. You will not mess with the WOT spark or knock sensors. It's best you leave that to an authorized CMR tuner. Rev limiter should stay where it is.

3. I have no idea what people are seeing with MDS and the different driving practices tend to skew results. MDS can save fuel on long hauls but around town, I recommend folks get out of O/D to avoid lugging the engine.

4. The most harmful setting is using a 93 octane tune with a lower rating octane fuel. Do NOT mess with your WOT spark or knock retard settings. That's a tuner's job.

5. You need the USB to tuner cable (provided) and a 12V transformer/power supply cord (not provided) which is available from any firm that sells the Predator or directly from DS themselves. I got mine from Radio Shack.

$272.95 through tonite at the above link. The u7778 which is the usb to serial and power supply can be bought on ebay for around $30. They want $50 on the site where I found this deal.

1. Definitely get a Diablosport tuner. The Predator is just fine- like latitud said, the tunes between the Predator and the Trinity are exactly the same. The Predator gives you the flexibility to tweak some stuff on your own, or to get a custom tune later if want. Part number U7137 is the right one for the 2009 Ram with the 5.7L Hemi

2. I wouldn't mess with the knock sensors- much better to lose a little performance because they to get tripped and pulled timing, than to let knocking go unchecked and cause engine damage. For the other settings, I don't think there is any one "best" configuration. The best settings for you will depend on your driving style, how you use the truck, and your personal preferences. I'd start with one of the regular tunes, try that for a while, and then see where you want to go from there. There is some good basic info on parameters here, and more specifics in the Diablosport forums.

3. I've heard of people that have disabled MDS and seen an improvement in gas mileage, and I've heard of folks that saw their gas mileage decrease after disabling MDS. I just left mine alone- haven't had any problems with it, and I haven't found enough to convince me that I should do otherwise.

4. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that you know exactly what a setting does, and what possible side effects could come from changing that setting, before you change it. Some good ways to mess up your engine quickly would be to get your fuel/air mixture too lean, or to advance timing too far.

5. You should definitely get the appropriate cables to connect the Predator to your computer- it'll allow you to get updates for the tool, transfer data logs to your pc, and transfer custom tunes to and from the tool. If you have a laptop, you don't really need the power adapter, although it is much more convenient than having to bring your laptop out to your truck to do an update. More details on the cables here
