Default GVW question Ram 2500 gas

Hello, this is my first post in this site. I am not a Ram owner, chevy guy, but I'm thinking about trading get into a 2011 Ram 2500 Mega with the the Hemi. Had some questions about the GVW of the gas engine platform. From what I've read it sounds like it is only an 8800 GVW? Why so low? Isn't this what the heavy half tons used to be? My current 2500HD is 9200 GVW and the new ones are 9600. What is the rear axle? Is the frame different from the diesels? Just curious as they may make me change my mind. I tow heavy occassionally and I would be over weight with this GVW. No, at this time I don't want or need the diesel. I'd like to get one but can't afford it and don't want the hassles of maintainance. From what I've read the newer Hemis are pretty decent in regards to power so I'm not too worried. Really what I want is the Mega Cab in the Laramie package. Just need to do some more homework before I put down $40K. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Z.

We have a lot of forums for all kinds of topics, so you shouldn't have any problems finding a place to post questions.

We LOVE pics of Rams.

Here's how to post them: http://www.ramforumz.com/forumdisplay.php?f=73

Here's the towing and GVW specs from Dodge's site for the 2010s, 2011 should be the same. http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/201...mlupseries.pdf

Thanks for the info. I'm still wondering why the GVW on the gas is only 8800 though. Is the real axle and or frame much lighter than the diesel?

Welcome to the forum,
This forum is full of great looking trucks; packed with great mod ideas and there are loads of knowledgeable and experienced people here.

You have asked some tough questions. Why is it rated at 8800 GVW.....Good question, but why have all the manufactures got their 3/4 ton trucks with well over a 1 ton payload????

Marketing......... that's why.

If you beef up the suspension to beat your competitor, then you are offering perceived value to justify a price. If it's not GVW and payload, it's HP and torque....or a certain type of 'luxury'....or whatever the marketing department can convince the engineers to do to make their vehicle have the 'edge' over the competition. They all do it....and become masters at it. Having said that, if you know what your requirements are, and know that a particular vehicle will not suffice, then you have no choice but to limit your shipping to those that meat the specification. If your specification means the Dodge will operated above the GVW or GCVWR, then you have to cull it from the list.

It is unfortunate that Dodge doesn't put the gas engine(s) in heavier trucks, as in your case, you indicated that diesel is 'not' and option......so Dodge has placed themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to convincing you to buy their truck; which is too bad, because they are such a wonderful truck to drive.

I hope you are able to find a truck that both meets your required specifications and provides you many years of comfortable and dependable service, irregardless of who's badge it sports. When you find the right truck for you, make sure you let us know what you got, and how you like it. We may be mostly Ram owners here, but are not oblivious to the fact that there are other worthy competitors, and some of them make some great trucks.

Best of luck in your search.

Enjoy the Z!

If you click on "UserCP" on the top left of this page you can go to where you can tell us about your truck. One of the options is the motor. You can see what the HP and torque ratings are.

The Hemi has awesome hp, but compared to the cummins, the torque isn't there. I'd suspect that is what the difference is.

I understand the torque is lower with the Hemi, but it's still rated up to 400 ft lbs. My 2500HD with the 6.0 only has 360 ft lbs and has a GVW of 9200. I also understand some of the components of tow rating are based on powertrain, but my main question is what is the rear axle in the Hemi 2500's and is the frame the same as the diesel or is it a lighter frame. My GCVWR from my 2500HD is 16,000 but I tow well above that most of the time. I'm not saying it's smart, but I have done it. Thanks for all the replies. There is some good information here.
