Default Transfer Case not Shifting

1996 1500 5.9L extended cab short bed 4x4. The transfer case will not shift from inside the truck, I can get under the truck and with a wrench I can move the linkage, but it is real stiff. If I unhook the rod from the shifter, I can move the shifter inside the cab. Would this be some internal problem with the transfer case? Or could it just be set up from lack of use? Just trying to see if I should keep working it with the wrench and some wd40 or not.

Thanks

Sounds like it's internal to me. Exactly what I don't know.

from under the truck with a wrench we put it in four wheel drive, but when you reconnect the shifter it will not move the linkage. So we are thinking the bushings are siezed on the shaft. Does that sound right?
