Default Bad Front Bumper Fascia Replacement/Repair

(Please excuse the length of the post)

Hello,

I have an '08 Ram 1500 Quad Cab Sport that was recently involved in a fender bender. The damage was a cracked front bumper cover (fascia), a badly bent/damaged reinforcement beam, and scuffs/paint damage to body-color grille. The repair work was done through my insurance co., at one of their recommended collision centers. It was a Lexus collision center.

Upon having the damage assessed by the adjuster, I was advised that the repair work would be as follows: repair/repaint grille, replace front bumper cover, and replace reinforcement beam.

Upon receiving the truck back, the bumper stood out like a sore thumb. The sides of the bumper were touching the side fenders, the fog lamps were completely unaligned with the fog cut outs in the bumper and had about a 1.5 inch gap from the edge of the bumper, and there was a significant gap between the top-center of the bumper and the grille. I immediately pointed out my concerns, and took the truck back the following day to have the bumper readjusted. Upon receiving it a second time, it looked like all they did was make sure the sides were no longer making physical contact, but still extremely close. No other changes were made. I was given a bullshit excuse by the advisor, stating that is all the adjusting possible, and that a "bumper only goes in one way, and bending or moving any further may break the brackets." I showed her a pic of my truck before, showing the normal gap between the fenders/headlamps and the bumper. The advisor simply dismissed this.

I then contacted the insurance company, informed them of my issues with the repair work and the body shop, and told them I need the bumper done right but don't want Lexus touching it anymore. I took it to the dealer where the truck was purchased, and had a body shop tech confirm my concerns with the bumper installation. The insurance co approved to pay the Dodge dealer to reinstall the bumper installation.

So now I've finally got the truck back from a third attempt, and while the gaps to the sides are now perfectly aligned, the gap at the front is still there. It is extremely noticeable. The Dodge body shop stated they do not know why the bumper sits that way despite their adjustment. Moreover, they actually had to use washers when installing the fog lamps to bring them up forward closer to the bumper to have it look normal. I was told it was pretty much the best that could be done.

So now here I am with this large gap at the front, and a modified fog lamp installation and no shop that I've been to can tell me why. I was informed that Lexus used an OEM bumper cover, and it states so in the estimate, but I have my doubts. I've been told it could be an aftermarket bumper, or that something is still bent underneath. Are these bumpers that hard to get right? I would appreciate any advise or information from anyone. Thanks.

Go back to the insurance company and tell them you want it right. If you've got picks of it before the accident, bring them.

Rootbeer, yeah... I'm gonna continue to beat on Geico's door to see what I can get done. I haven't been thrilled about this experience with them, though, from a customer service standpoint.

GTyankee, is that a custom job? Bumper does seem like it's really close. Oddly enough, it doesn't look bad on that truck. On mine, it was touching the sides and kinda sagging down at the front.

Edit - yeah, as I looked more through the pictures I can see it's a custom job. That bumper looks good, though.

Default still bent under bumper

the big clue for me was when you said they placed washers to set the fogs.
the bumper support and crash beam is still tweaked. the bumper goes on one way albeit with adjustment. If Lexus set beam to factory specs you would not have the mis-alignment problem.
Tell Dodge to put your truck on a frame alignment rack and check all mounts. you should get satisfaction when the move the support correctly.

What does Lexus know about American heavy Iron anyway.

Thanks very much for the response. I'll be contacting Geico to set this up with the Dodge dealer. Maybe I'll finally get this thing on properly.

Nitro, I took your advice and requested through Geico that my truck be put on a frame alignment rack and they approved. That said, I have no knowledge or experience with this procedure, so I wanted to ask you what I should look out for? Should I simply ask them to check the mounts?

Since I'm doing it through the insurance, I want to make sure they don't just have them put it on the rack and tell me nothing is wrong with it when clearly there is. Any additional advice is greatly, greatly appreciated.

Default Frame alignment machine

If, they do put the truck on the rack. If, they check all front end measurements. They will measure all front end spot points. Spot points are points of brackets and beams in horizontal and vertical plane. First they will determine if the frame is straight.
Each point has a reference distance in relation to the frame. All hanging points, IE bumper brackets are referenced off known referenced points documented in the CAD Engineering files. The frame machine will have those exact points stored, they will be able to see if each bracket or beam is in the exact location it needs to be.
Therefore they can move a mis-aligned reference point. After it is moved everything on your front end will be as it left the factory. The fit and finish should be as you picked it up new.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the help. I really appreciate the advice.

One more question - Should the fog light washers be removed before this procedure is done? I figure it'd be a good idea to do so, that way the washers won't be an obstruction in the natural lines/adjustment of the frame.

I have to say as well, great help there nitro chris! I've been reading and watching this thread because it's given me some help as well. My gap isn't where yours is BigEmpty, mine is just under the driver's side headlight. Looks like the bumper is lower there and the passenger side looks perfect! Reps to ya nitro chris and good luck in getting yours back the way it should be BigEmpty cause you sure have a nice looking truck!
