Default What axles are direct swaps?

1997 RAM 1500 5.2L Auto (3.55 gears)

I am wondering what axles (with 3.73 or 4.10 gears) are direct swaps? I have only had the truck a couple/few months so I dont know much about this specific Dodge yet, other than I love the way it drives... and it needs new gears.

I am fine with swapping to a 3/4-ton axle set if I have to, 8-lug wheels are all over the place so thats not really an issue.

Mostly I am just looking for what years and kinds of trucks I need to be looking for to swap axles from.

I would prefer to not have to cut/weld on this truck like I have on most of my others, but I HAVE to get a new gear set and usually rebuilding an axle is cheaper than rebuilding and re-gearing at the same time.

not for sure but you probaly need to count the spline on the axel and measure the length of the axel before you really get to deep into it.

Well, for swapping axles, you might find 3:92's which were optional on some 1500s with certain towing packages. Off road Rams had 4:10 gears, but these are pretty rare.
I believe 2500/3500 axles have a 4:10 option. You want to find a front axle off a 1999 and newer ram because they have a 35 spline carrier and thicker axles than the earlier d-60 front axles. I intentionaly didn't go into a lot of details here, but rear axles usually need the spring pads relocated. There are other minor things you may need to do as well, but don't let that dissuade you from upgrading.

no worries... go into as much detail as you can/want. I have been building 4x4 trucks for around 20 years (I am officially getting old now) ... but this is my first Dodge. I have owned Chevy's and Toyota's mainly... so I figured much like the chevy D44 which was interchangeable between the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton, that there would be a dodge equivalent.

I was hoping that the rear-ends of the 2500 would have perches in the same place as the 1500... but if I have to relocate a couple of perches, thats no biggie, all things considered. as long as there is an interchangeable front-end... that should be easy enough.

How did this turn out for you? I am looking at swapping my 9.25 with 3/4-1ton rear and possibly a 60 to the front

as with most projects, funds got reallocated before I could get it done. Its still on the list, just lower in priority.
